HGST Travelstar 2.5-Inch 500GB 7200RPM SATA III 32MB Cache SATA 6Gbps Internal Bare or OEM Drives (HTS725050B7E630)

This is a preliminary review as the drive was just put into use. I bought it as a play forward piece of hardware. It is being used in ancient Dell D-ought20 series laptops - either a 620 or an 820 with the idea it will eventually be yanked and put in a newer machine at some point. It works fine with these older laptops with preliminary testing. The only unusual thing I ran into is i couldn't get windows (both an old XP pro, and a win7 home premium 64bit) to see the drive. So I put a live linux cd into the optical drive of one of my desktops and hooked up the drive via and external usb drive connection and formatted with Gparted - setting up both NTFS and EXT4 for dual booting. My initial impression is that it is just a decent drive at a decent price and handy for many purposes. It appears to run pretty cool compared to a couple of old 2.5 7200rpm 1.5 gig throughput drives I have. Will try to check back in latter after it has been in use for a while. Update - 10-31-2015: Had too add to this review as this drive is now fully in use and it is exceptional! It is no SSD - but it is the fastest disk drive I have ever had in a laptop. Even though it is in an old Dell D620 - so I can't realize all it's speed - it made a huge difference over the old 1.5gb 7200rpm drive. So if you have an old computer and want to add some pep to it - but don't want to go SSD (which would make getting at least Win7 a good idea - if using Windows) then this is a great buy!

The 5 star rating only applies to New Unused old stock drives. Hitachi / HGST doesn't make these any longer and they have been bought by WDC so you have to find a drive that has never been used. Be VERY wary of so-called open box. I received an open box drive that had over 10,000 hours of power on time!!! A few vendors open the drive's Mylar casing and test it. These should show 1 Hour or less power on time and ONE Start up power cycle. There are fine. I use Crystal Disk Info to verify power on hours and cycles. It's a free program. With all that said, these are fast, reliable and quiet. Hitachi drives were made in their Global storage Facilities in Thailand which is a top quality facility that they originally acquired from IBM. Make sure you get the SATA 6Gb / Sec drive for the fastest performance. It's an electronics upgrade to the earlier 3 Gb / Sec drives. Hitachi / HGST drives have consistently been rated the most durable by large sate warehousing companies. They are in nearly all my systems.

This drive works well. In most cases, you have to re-initialize the drive to make them work. Most computers are capable of doing this easily. Once I initialized this drive it worked as required with no problems. the HDD is the archive drive of choice as it has no power drain concern where the memory can be erased as with the SSD RECOMMENDED I do not know the seller nor did I receive any money or product for my random review 241010 0329

This is a 7.0mm high drive compared to the standard, and much more common, 9.5 mm high drives (some very large capacity laptop drives are even taller than that). That means this will fit in the ultra-thin, current-design Acer ao725 and Acer ao756, in the Asus x101ch, and in the modern crop of "Ultrabooks". This will also fit in recent MacBook Pro's which generally use a "side pin" system to "suspend" the harddrive in the airspace, eliminating the need for any spacer. If in doubt, MacBooks and their requirements are well covered at the iFixit website and you can determine your Mac's i.d. by clicking on "About" in the leftmost drop down menu. The main claim to fame of this drive (besides fitting in the newer thin laptop bays) is that it supports SATA III; almost all other laptop drives are limited to SATA II. This is only a benefit if your laptop has a SATA III controller; I believe most MacBooks since 2010 have this feature (but track down the specs of YOUR MacBook!); of the Windows computers listed above, only the Acer ao756 has SATA III capability. On my ao756, I saw about a 12% speed improvement compared to the stock, single platter, 320 gb SATA II Seagate. This was NOT, however, reflected in the WEI or Windows Experience Index test that Microsoft offers in the Windows 7 Control Panel. In contrast, when I dropped an SSD into the ao756 the WEI shot up from 5.9 to 7.4, and I saw the same increase in the measly Atom powered netbook (N2600) that I dropped an SSD into. So there is performance and there is performance. SSD's still rule speed, conventional HD's still trump on price per gb which translates into 3 to 4 times the capacity at a much lower price. I would use this in a MacBook Pro with a 250gb or 320gb drive just to improve storage capacity. As a much appreciated bonus, this drive is ultra quiet and vibration free, rated for 400 gees of operating shock resistance, which is absurdly sturdy. Plus, since it has only a single platter (and a power efficient controller) it is energy saving. For other laptops, with SATA II interfaces, the upgrade isn't as compelling and the low height could be problem in 9.0mm high bays. You will need to decide if you can get or jury rig a spacer, if one is needed based on the way your HD bay works. Based on the price I paid and the price for other, older tech drives, there is no "premium" for this high-tech HD. On the other hand don't expect to come anywhere close to SSD speeds (even for an SSD held back by a SATA II interface) from this SATA III drive (even when this drive is running under a SATA III interface).

It took a little figuring, but read another's review saying to tilt a bit upwards to insert in SATA connector. Seemed to plug in SATA II, but computer said no hard drive. Looked inside to make sure where plug is, then turned my laptop upside down making it better to receive SATA III into socket. Had been slipping right out, but when into plug correctly, it stays in laptop and does not slip right out. (I tried my broken 2.5in hd to see how tight it had fit.) Now this thin 7.0mm fits tight, screws back in, computer recognizes it. Installed Windows immediately and works great. This 7200RPM hd is a lot faster, quicker action than the former 5400RPM. Very happy with speed and that it can be used perhaps later on in thinner laptop. Not a bit noisier than WD it had before, no clicks or whirrs, less noise in fact. Hitachi name and serial number shows up in device manager and says it is working. And it is, giving my 2009 laptop the speed to keep up with what I expect today! Very glad I tried this speed than no other thin hd's sold have in this 500GB capacity at 2.5in. form factor.

This drive worked great - for a few months. I installed it with a clean format in late April 2017. By the end of July 2017, it had developed bad sectors that crashed the OS and caused boot problems. Today, it failed completely and the bios won't even recognize that it's there. The machine was never dropped, overheated, abused, or even heavily used. Do not trust the high feedback score - it's for the HGST product, not for this disreputable seller. Read through the negative reviews. Buyer beware.

In spite of my best efforts to learn where this drive was made nobody seemed able or willing to disclose that information to me when I asked about it on Amazon. When it came I discovered to my dismay it was MADE IN CHINA!!! My experience with things with moving parts or great precision do not last. The fact that this drive was made in China did not make me happy but being pressed for time to install a new drive for my laptop I went ahead and installed it. So far it works but I don't have high expectations for it to last very long. I prefer to purchase Western Digital, Seagate, IBM or even Samsung drives but none having the specs I wanted were available at a reasonable price. So anyway, time will tell how this drive holds up but if it dies prematurely I will publish that fact on Amazon's website so nobody else gets stung with this thing. I sorely wish Amazon would cease selling things made in China. Besides, does anybody like how that country treats its citizens and constantly routinely steals our intellectual properties??? When will we in the US wake up?

I purchased two of the HGST Travelstar Hdd for use with an Atomos Ninja-2 monitor/recorder. This particular model is one of the preferred drives for use in the Ninja. You should be very careful when installing this unit in the drive carrier provided with the recorder. The drive carrier is made from plastic and if you tighten the attachment screws too tightly you will not be able to remove the carrier easily. (My advice is to snug the screws to just even with the plastic surface...this IS a big deal if you do not want to disassemble the Ninja to remove the drive)

Die Festplatte sitzt bei mir in einem 9 Jahre alten HP-Notebook (HP nx9420) mit dem Betriebssystem WinXP. Als Ersatz für die defekte Momentus XT 750 GB kam für mich nur noch eine konventionelle Festplatte in Frage. Nach 3 defekten Momentus-XT (1x 500GB, 2x 750 GB) war die Zeit reif für einen Wechsel. Außer der Drehzahl von 7200rpm, einer Kapazität von 500GB, SATA III war der günstige Preis entscheidend für den Kauf. Das Clonen ging problemlos von statten. Bin bisher mit der Z7K500 sehr zufrieden. Das Notebook funktioniert einwandfrei, die HD ist für dieses Gerät völlig ausreichend. Wollte auf SSD von Samsung umsteigen, selbst mit dem mitgelieferten DATA Migration Tool hat das nicht geklappt. Es kam immer die gleiche Fehlermeldung. Anfragen bei Samsung/Hanaro führten zu keiner Lösung, es kamen nur Standardsprüche: USB-Adapter defekt, Datenmenge zu groß usw.. Mit Acronis und Paragon klappte der Umstieg genau so wenig. So habe ich nicht bereut, die 7Z500 gekauft zu haben.

Tres bon disque , taille ok , le cache et la vitesse de rotation donnent un coup de fouet a votre ordi. Silencieux et sans vibrations. Vraiment bien, dommage il manque les 4 vis fixations laterales et le carton de conditionnement trop grand permettait au disque de ramasser des " chocs " pendant le transport. Formatable multi os, boot , partitionnable.

What can I say? It works, it's fast and it's big. I bought it for my 13" Macbook Pro. I first created an Extended Journaled partition which took a couple of seconds. I then cloned my entire hard drive on to it using free SuperDuper. That took a little more than an hour but I was expecting that to take at least two. I then tested it by booting with the alt key. It worked fine so off came the back of the computer and I put it in. After startup apart from my computer being zippier everything was as I had left it. Brilliant! I'd had to upgrade after installing Mountain Lion. My computer had slowed so much I couldn't even type. I added more Ram then I looked at a SSHD, but when I saw this was 6 Gb/s the same as a SSHD and a LOT cheaper the decision was made.

Nell'era dei dischi a Stato Solido, questo Travelstar HGST (Hitachi) rigorosamente meccanico, rappresenta una valida ed efficiente alternativa. Questo disco ha un ottimo compromesso tra la capacità di archiviazione (500GB) e la velocità di accesso e/o di memorizzazione dei dati. Nella dimensione (o fattore di forma) 2,5", questo Travelstar si caratterizza per un ridotto spessore, che agevola l'installazione senza problemi, anche nei portatili con ridotti spazi di predisposizione. Alle ottime prestazioni concorrono questi fattori: la velocità di rotazione dei piatti a 7200rpm (rotazioni al minuto) contro i 5400rpm di norma, ed anche la memoria di buffer (la cache) di ben 32MB il doppio rispetto a modelli analoghi dotati di 16MB o peggio ancora di soli 8MB. Insomma un valido prodotto dal costo molto contenuto e dalle ottime prestazioni. Vivamente consigliato come storage, sia interno che esterno, oppure come disco di Time Machine Apple™.
