Would this work with the Thomas wooden railway sets?

All wooden railway systems use the original Brio standard invented in 1958

Do the magnets in the lumber work with the Brio Gantry Crane?

I'm sure they do. We don't have the Gantry Crane but we have a different Brio crane (from the Rail and Road Crane Set) and all of the freight items (these logs, box car square, and removable engine) have magnets for lifting. Brio matches it's magnets so that all of the "lifters" are attracted to its freight items.
