Great trash can on all levels!
Great trash can with slow, quiet closing lid, fits snug against side of sink area and double opening of lids keeps it close to wall without hitting the wall. Even husband thought I made a great purchase. A little pricey for a trash can but works great, solid construction, the dual containers is brilliant! Ordinary kitchen trash bags work great. We use one side for the food scraps in a โcovered plasticโ container. We are required to be separate out food scraps as per state regulations. The separate plastic container fits perfectly and there is no garbage smell from the whole trash can!

Perfect for low-waste homes! Less bins; sleek & sturdy; dog friendly!
I was using two 40L SimpleHuman "K" fit bins (one for trash; one for recyclables), though in my tiny kitchen they took up too much space. I have a low-waste home...no single-use items unless absolutely necessary, no paper towels, tissues, paper plates, boxed meals, wasteful consumerism, etc. so I didn't need to empty my bin weekly, but waiting until it was full caused odor issues. PROS: This dual 20L (40L total) "D" fit butterfly bin was a better fit so my trash would not get stinky. It will still take me nearly 2-weeks to fill each compartment. It takes up less space than the two bins, and the butterfly top keeps my rubbish from accidentally going out the side when I toss it in too quickly. The foot lever works awesome; it does not require a lot of pressure, but does not fly open easily, and has a quiet close feature. I am confident a dog could not easily get into the top...my dog is not a trash fiend but I like making sure he's safe anyway. The "stay open" lid is easy to adjust for when you need it open longer. I bought the custom fit liners and they have not leaked and they fit great. Being metal, I put my nephew's awesome artwork on a magnet on it. CONS: I have not yet been able to get the "bucket park" feature to work, and there doesn't seem to be anything for the inside bin to lean on to get it to stay while leaning forward, and have watched others' videos. Not sure the issue here but I will just have to remove the entire inner-bin to change the bag out. I do not believe you can attach the composter bin with this, though I would like to have that option.

5 1/2 years and I'd do it again
I wasn't sure about this once we got it and saw it was fairly small for what I was used to for a main kitchen trash can but I think 5 1/2 years with it earns me the right to brag, and admit my concerns weren't warranted. It's easy to clean if it needs to be. Small(ish) maybe, but we seem to not have any issue with capacity, at all. We tend to dump the recycle side into our recycle cart so we don't replace bags all the time. The trash side is near impossible to do that for obvious reasons: trash = moisture and in general, kitchen garbage! The feet keep it planted on the floor resisting sliding, it's shape makes it easy to tuck out of the way yet be accessible and it looks good. It really does, it's a good looking trash can that doesn't stick out because of size. It blends. Function of the foot pedal opening the top has been flawless, completly perfect for 5 1/2 years. It's built really well. It may be a little more expensive that other cans but these are made with quality material, functional and well built. Cost of bags......I was really annoyed by that but in the end, I'm back today to reorder recycle bags and realized the cost hasn't been much as all over the years. On average we use less than 1 bag per week of recycle, and probably right at 1 bag for trash. The bags, they fit snug in the cans and never pull off. They're easy to release, tie up with the handle/ties and out out it goes, and even better, the recycle work better in recycling centers where recycling is sorted. If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. Here's to another 5+ years!!

WOW. THE MOST AMAZING TRASH CAN
Too many people don't recycle. THIS IS THE PERFECT TRASH CAN for you to GET ONBOARD AND START RECYCLING. Push the foot pedal, it opens up, and you can throw into the correct location because U have 2 locations. The two bins are equal-sized, and that is completely correct. The dual-lid doors, are compact efficient and close real slow and cute, because of a hydraulic damper. Very much keeping this trash can! Love it! One problem is U need to buy the 'Simple Human Size D Trash bags', but U can do that. also U will save money by re-using the plastic bag for the recycle. Because U are supposed to rinse out the cans and bottles. And the plastic bag should NOT go into the recycling can, SO just use that one over and over. I think there is only one problem. Expensive! But I overlooked the high price and am keeping it, because I LOVE having both the recycle, and the trash, all at 1 push of the foot pedal.

Simple Human makes great trashcans
Once I find something I like, I stick with it. We now have maybe 5 simple human trashcans, all of excellent build quality. These will last a long time. This particular model has a unique 2-bin design so you can recycle on one side and throw away on the other. Sure the custom bags are designed to make you buy from them, but their bags fit perfectly and are very strong. There are also generic ones that work well too. I was a little annoyed that I kept having to step on the lever to open the top. This is fine if you are standing in front of it, but annoying while sitting at a desk. Then I remembered that the lids can prop open so I can now do my best impression of Michael Jordan tossing a bad idea into the trash can.

Very well made, but fills quickly
As with most simplehuman products, this garbage can is well made. I've owned this particular one for five years now, and it's showing no signs of quitting--the pedal still works, the lid opens as it should...and that's saying something, given that mechanical breakdown is one of the chief complaints of a lot of garbage cans out there, and the stainless ones are so expensive that breakage like that in a short window of time is unacceptable. Another thing that's great about this is the slim design. I chose it specifically for that reason. I keep mine on the side of my kitchen island, in a kitchen that doesn't otherwise have tons of clearance room for walking, so I didn't want to take it up with garbage can square-footage. The pedal in the front is great, and the butterfly doors are really nice if you use it like I do, alongside an island where you do all your work. The lids can be propped open by moving the lever found just inside the lid, and scraps created while prepping for dinner can be pushed off the edge of the counter and directly into the open can. The lid doors are very low profile, and do not protrude past the height of the counter, so they are not in the way of any operation, and I would imagine that this design puts much less stress on the hinges and opening mechanisms than with single-lid pails that hinge at the far end of the pail. Less weight on the hinges. So no doubt, this is why my particular pail has lasted so long. I bought this one because I needed both garbage and recycle bins, but having now used it for this long, I will say that I regret getting this particular one. Each of the two pails is far too small to be practical. My son has garbage duty, and bemoans the fact that he has to go sometimes multiple times in a day to empty the garbage, because it fills so quickly. One typcial dinner prep will fill the can to overflowing. Recyclables fill almost as quickly. So unless you're an apartment dweller with ABSOLUTELY no space but for this, I'd recommend getting a full-sized garbage pail (simplehuman makes a pail exactly like this one, but with one large pail inside instead of two smaller ones) and putting recyclables elsewhere...or getting a second pail for them. This can doesn't come with any sort of odor filter, but we have not had issues with odor. Even though there's a visible gap where the two doors meet, smell has not been a large issue for us...although, that may purely be a function of the quick turnaround time in filling the pails. It's possible it never stinks because we empty it too quickly for things to get out of hand. We do also use scented, deodorizing liners, FWIW. Plan for us going forward is to buy a second butterfly-lidded pail, but one that doesn't have divided pails like this one. That'll be dedicated to garbage, and I'll take this one and put it on the other side of the island. We'll put recyclables in the blue recycle side, and refundable bottles and cans in the black one.

I love great engineering....
When I was living in a condo temporarily I bought the smaller Simple Human butterfly 12.5 gallon garbage can and loved it! The smooth operation of the lid. The sleek look of the can itself (never thought I would say that about a garbage can). The fact that the plastic can on the inside has holes in it,so when you put a bag in you don't have to fight the air pressure to get the bag to fill properly. All the little details of thought they put into their trash cansis great (for a hefty price). And I was using a brown grocery bag for recycling cause I did not have room for two cans or a larger one. So when I moved into a house I thought 'hah, no more brown bagging it!'. But honestly, even though I have a larger kitchen now, why would I want to have 2 garbage cans, so I looked into this unit. At first I was thinking, 'hmmmm, 5.3 gallons, can I live with that? Will that be enough?'. Well, it is. Yes they are smaller bags. Yes, I'm making more trips to the outside garbage can. But who cares! it's only about 40 feet walking distance. It's only once or twice a week. It's like a whole 5 minutes per week out of my life (probably more like 2), but I get a sleek elegant solution for both trash and recycle. Now, to be honest, I usually pre-crush most of my recycle (which I've always done in any case), and I take the recycle out way more than the trash, but that's also because as I put trash in I use the bigger trash items and use them the compact the rest, extending the time between me having to go outside. I don't compact my recycle, because usually it's dry stuff and I can just dump it directly in the big can outside without having to use a whole new bag. The trash, however, I throw out bag and all. Loooong story short, this thing rocks! It has all the features I described for the first unit (which I now use in the laundry room) AND it takes care of both trash and recycling. Perfect solution for my situation (p.s. I am married and have a child, so we generate a decent amount of trash).
