Excellent value M2 SSD adapter allowing you to give a new lease of life to 2014 Mac Minis.
Probably not a lot of people need to press one of the late 2014 - 2018 model Mac minis into regular service, but I needed to do just that. Using this adapter to add an M2 SSD alongside the Mac's existing HDD proved to be a very easy and worthwhile upgrade.Using an ifixit teardown guide provides all the details needed to open the Mac mini, the adapter is designed to fit between the Mac mini's system board and the metal bottom cover so minimal disassembly is required, but note that the supplied torx screwdriver in the kit didn't work as the Mac mini used 'security torx' screws which a standard torx screwdriver can't open. The system board end of the adapter uses a push fit to connect to the Mac Mini's PCIe connector. It doesn't use retaining screws at the connected end as the Apple part does, but uses a single screw and a sticky pad to fix the adapter to the Mac mini's chassis.A second screw is then used to fix the M2 SSD to the adapter, if not using an 80mm long SSD then you will need to move the retaining nut to the 60mm, 42mm, or 30mm positions. The late 2014 Mac mini uses PCIe 2 and has 2 lanes dedicated to the PCIe SSD controller, so in theory, it can support up to 1000 MB/s throughput. Using a Western Digital Blue SN570 (a PCIe 3 device supporting up to 4 lanes) I saw read speeds of 660 MB/s and write speeds of 750 MB/s, which while not close to the SSD's theoretical throughput was 8 times faster than the Mac Mini's HDD write speed of 84 MB/s and read speed of 104 MB/s.This was a simple upgrade, and given the 2014 Mac Mini's slower PCIe speeds you don't need to buy an expensive SSD, even slower PCI NVMe SSDs can support faster speeds than the Mac Mini does. When I bought this adapter and a 500GB SSD the total price was just £55 (November 2022) and gave the 8-year-old Mac Mini a new lease of life. Very pleased so far.

The screwdriver supplied with that adapter card won't work, you need a Torx 6 Security head
This works a treat on a Mac Mini Late 2014 A1347, but I've deducted a star as it comes with the wrong Torx 6 screwdriver, which meant I wasted a day and had order a separate screwdriver. The screwdriver supplied with that adapter card won't work, you need a Torx 6 Security head, it comes with a Torx 6 NON Security head!).I upgraded a Late 2014 MacMini (1.4 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 A1347), and what a difference, I thought the Mac was past it's usefulness and I had been using it solely as a Plex server, but as my MacBook Pro is in for repair with Apple, I needed to use it for a week or so, but the old HDD was painfully slow (60MBs read write speeds) it would take almost 4 mins to boot up and every click was taking over 20 secs to react! With this card installed the MacMini responds instantly like my MaBookPro, it's had a whole new lease of life, I'm truly amazed, boots macOS Monterey in under a minute. I'm currently getting 700MBs read and writes using this card (probably the maximum the MacMini can handle), but when that reaches it's end of life I'll reuse this card in an external Thunderbolt enclosureIf you're looking to do the same with an old Mac Mini, grab one of these WD Blue SN570 1TB High-Performance M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09HKDQ1RN/?th=1There's plenty of videos online explaining how to do the upgrade, it's really easy, it will take 15mins tops. Then reboot holding down the Command R (recovery mode). open disk utility format the card, then install macOS... or linux or windows etc

Easy and quick upgrade!
I purchased this to upgrade my 2014 Mac mini. Had it installed within ten minutes. Then quickly transferred the OS to the new Nvme drive. Significantly more responsive and boots much quicker. Well worth it to revive an ageing mini.

It works.
Bought this in combination with 256MB Crucial SSD and it’s transformed the performance of my 2014 MacMini. Came with tools to complete the job which was very simple, took about 15 minutes. 1 star off as it uses a sticky pad to hold it in place instead of utilising the available bolt post, which is a minor point.
