A Very Handy knife that is Blunt & built for kids in mind!
One Very good Quality knife with full rust resistance that holds and retains it's edge lightweight in your pocket well designed and this knife has been in existence since the late 18th century. I've researched this knife company from France and it has a very long history of making quality knives and great quality made with care and you can be sure that it's money well spent. I bought thisbecause it's blunt there's no Point on the blade but very sharp and it's identical to a common butter knife that you'll find in your utensil shelf and this knife has a locking mechanism on it so you can be sure that'll keep on opened and won't close on you while you're using it. One very well made knife is all I can say about this knife and I never thought that France has some quality knives they're selling under the radar!

Perfect for children
My children are 8 and 9 and starting a wilderness course. I wanted them to have their own knives but I was really nervous about it until I found these. They are very sharp!! but they have a rounded tip which was exactly what I was wanting given the age of my children. They lock while open and they lock while closed. Worth every penny, easy for the children to use on their own, fits their hand well and fits in their pocket perfectly. The only thing I would change to it is maybe adding a pocket clip or a belt clip just because my son had his and his pocket and it ended up falling out unknowingly. Miraculously we were able to find it but if it was clipped to his pocket it never would have happened.

Lovely color!
After a feather edge touchup. So sharp! Perfect! Cut my finger trimming plastic. Slides right thru! Great cheese slicer. Just wipe with dishrag, rinse and carefully dry or more cut towels! Lol

I love the design; functional for the price; blade metal seems excessively soft.
As I said, I love the design of this knife. It's adequately sharp to do simple food prep tasks. However, if you run a finger lightly along the blade edge, it feels rough and deformed in a microscopic way. It feels like when the blade is folded, that the blade edge rests up against the wood surface inside of the handle slot, and this contact is doing damage to the blade edge. I tried sharpening the blade with an inexpensive ceramic knife sharpener, and I still could feel a bit of roughness. I suppose this isn't the end of the world given the price level, and maybe this is why the product is marketed as a child's beginner knife. All in all, it feels like it's worth about what I paid for it.

Very sharp
The knife is lighter in weight than I was expecting because I'm used to larger knives that are all metal. The body of this one is lighter weight wood (not flimsy, just light) and the blade is thin (again, not flimsy) so it won't drag your pocket down when you carry it. You could probably carry it in a shirt pocket, but you'd probably lose it that way.As advertised, there is no point -- it has a rounded end -- so it's not a stabby knife, it's a slicey knife, which is what it's designed for: cutting apples, oranges, sandwiches, etc. at a picnic, or the like. And as mentioned in the headline, the blade is very sharp (which is what you want in a knife), and I found that out on accident when washing it before using it.The locking mechanism is pretty simple: turn the locking ring to unlock it, pull the blade out, and turn the ring back to lock the blade open.I bought it to use as a non-scary looking pocket knife because it has no point on it and it will still cut things. It's also not too small or too large; just the right size for me.

Great (except)
I LOVE Opinel. This is my 4th pocket knife. 2 were gifts for my sons but I used them, they were a size 7 like this one. I also have a size 10 carbon steel one. These are top notch. This time I bought this size 7 for me, to carve wood because they are so sharp and I didnt want a pointed one per my purposes. It's as nice and sharp and handy as expected EXCEPT on this one particular knife, the lock doesn't want to stay in place. I use it but I just have to occasionally check to make sure it's not sliding on me. If you're buying this for a child just tell them to be mindful of that in case you get one with a looser ring like i had, or use it yourself for a bit to assess the tightness of the locking ring

Kids first knife
Purchased this for my son a Bear in the Cub Scouts and my daughter a Junior in the Girl Scouts. This is a real knife with a sharp blade so parents ensure your kids are ready to use this. There are several You Tube videos to help you introduce knives to children and Opinel in particular. I keep the knife safely with my other pocket knives and the knives come out only for our camping trips. The knife has a rounded tip making it safer to handle. There is no spring mechanism to fight when opening the blade making small hands and fingers comfortable opening and closing the blade and preventing accidental snap closures less likely. The blade is locked into place (opened or closed) using the metal ring in the middle. This was easier to use then the unlocking mechanism on most knives we tested and safer than the unlocked blades of a Swiss Army knife. The size of the wooden handle is easier to use for their smaller hands and is comfortable and secure.
