The Complete Poetry and Essential Prose of John Milton (Modern Library (Hardcover))

Arrived in p much pristine condition, no pages marked up or anything like that. The only issue was how long it took initially (not quite in time for the first few weeks of class), but I was able to make do with online resources until then so otherwise it's all good.

My 3 star rating is purely a bibliophile's response to the poor quality binding given an otherwise very good edition of John Milton's recovered work. As a collection it's a fine achievement, but as a useable volume to be read and handled it's a piece of @#$%. What's most irritating is that the book could have been given fine cloth boards and possibly even a leather spine for less than five or six dollars more. Given the $35 discounted price it could have still come in under $40 and matched the LOA and Everyman's bookbinding standard. It should be noted that the latest Dickens "Nonesuch" editions offer approximately a 10" x 7" format of quality cloth, leather spines and mylar dust jackets for anywhere from $23 to $35.Some years back Modern Library went down the road of minimal standards in hardcover books, replacing full Smythe sewn bindings and sturdy cloth boards with glue and cheap paper over cardboard. In smaller volumes of poetry or prose this is unfortunate but perhaps acceptable given the price. But, in a $35 volume approaching 3" in thickness it's a disaster waiting to happen. Only marginally more sturdy than a paperback, the weight alone will tear such a volume apart in a very short period of time just through normal reading. Any rough handling of the type typical of lower classmen taking English Lit 101 will render the work suitable only for emergency toilet paper in the freshman dorm. If at all possible search out alternative sellers to ascertain if the volume is available in a library or text book binding as the additional expense would be money well spent. Alternatively, if you're willing to spend a little more ($50+) upfront, I would recommend the Hackett Publications edition which is similar in content and of vastly superior construction. It's what I purchased after returning this volume.The above information is not available on amazon's product description page nor generally commented on by other reviewers. I would hope that for some potential purchasers this might make them pause before plunging ahead with a purchase they might not be happy with. You are, after all, being asked to pay $35 for non copyrighted material and should expect to receive a product approaching $35 of material value. This volume doesn't meet that expectation.

needed the physical copy for this as a i have the kindle version which i don’t like for a multitude of reasons and this has been a great addition to my catalog of books. of course, for me, it’s for my class but it is a good book of milton’s work.the kindle version is good but i don’t like kindles interface and it glitches a lot so i just decided to get the physical as well.- doesn’t highlight words correctly, doesn’t sync up where you left off

Hey I got the kindle version for school, i never do reviews but i was super excited with this one. The footnotes are just like the book dont believe the other reviews. This is GREAT FOR COLLEGE GUYS YOU DONT HAVE TO KEEP FLIPPING PAGES FOR THE FOOTNOTES THE KINDLE VERSION IS A HEAVEN SENT THE FOOTNOTES ARE RIGHT THEIR FOR YOU TO CLICK TRUST ME OTHER STUDENTS HAVE THIS BIG BULKY UGLY BOOK AND THE KINDLE VERSION ROCKS THEY ARE ALL JEALOUS AHAHAAH

I suppose a five star review from a long-time Milton fan is a given. But he is wonderful and this book has tons to wallow in. Just ask my Milton prof! The class seems to like him too.

The copious notes are quite stunning. As a psychotherapist I read this as a parable of emotional development. I read it following the recommendation of Wilfred Bion.

I Enjoy much of what I have read by Milton, and for my birthday this year I asked for a hardback book with both Paradise Lost and Regained, This was the only one with a photo and good description of it. As it was the only book that could be found on Amazon with the two books, this is the book I received, WOW, I no longer need any other of my paperbacks of Miltons works, this has them all. I am not the person to look to for proper this and proper that, nor about the translation or other things like that, I am the person that can tell you the stories are in there and it as near as I can tell the pretty much the same as the other 2 versions I own, no noticeable difference.

Gorgeous edition, with gorgeous commentary and textual notes of one of my favorite authors. It suits someone with an interest in scholarship moreso than someone with a casual interest, so I would keep that in mind. It’s also immensely bulky considering the amount of his works are crammed in, but that’s a small price to pay for something so comprehensive (tho if you can’t or don’t want a massive edition, you’re better off getting smaller texts). Great stuff!

I love this book – a massive, comprehensive Milton – the sort of heavy tome you want to peruse for hours in a deep armchair. The editors have produced a clear, readable Milton in modern spelling, and included all the verse and some very good works from the prose. Their introduction, notes, and other accompanying materials are superb, too.

Some of the most brilliant literature I've ever read, highly recommended.
