It can be annoying always having to remove it to retrieve items below, but it's only a minor inconvenience (and optional to use to begin with). I only use about a pound of ice daily and my lunchbox gets stored in vehicles at work sites in fairly extreme summer heat and direct sunlight at times. Having the hard liner is key to keep from smashing and also is easy to take out and run through the dishwasher. Pockets are nice, it's become my travel container, I keep toothpicks, silverware, salt/pepper, etc in there all the time. It's also surprisingly spacious.
