Seen better Hercules films tbh

It's not entirely triple A but it's honestly a very solid film and put a more... human spin on the man himself. Rather than being this unimpeachable half god he's a human being with the weight of his past on his shoulders. It's a good successor movie to the old TV series while bringing the old series into the modern era of film making.

I have to admit I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would. For what it was (did they used to call them “Sword and sandals “ movies. It is definitely not for younger viewers as it is quite graphic. And it’s theme has been more “Adultified” if I can put it that way. It’s dialogue Is more grown up. Some swearing, but not over the top and no gratuitous nudity. Performances from all the actors Is top notch, which again raises the film above what you expect, and Dywane Johnson again shows why he’s the number one action star at the moment (just pipping Vin Diesel). He can do all the physical stuff, but he can actually act and convey emotion. And I must admit I’m still a fan of 3D, and when the 3D Is done well, as not all are. It really is enjoyable, the spear coming out of the screen and literally touching the tip of your nose a good highlight. These films don’t win Oscars, there Main purpose is to give you two hours of good old fashioned utter hokum, and this one delivers in spades.

Another movie all about the ancient hero Hercules. Stories of the legendary hero have been told and retold many times down the years. Thus like all such stories and movies about a character who has been in the public domain for longer than copyright laws have existed, this is a completely fresh take on a familiar source. Although in the case the source is actually a graphic novel  Hercules: The Thracian Wars  which came up with it's own take on the character.Hercules is a legend. A man who has completed the twelve labours. And a man whose reputation both precedes him and which has also made him somewhat larger than life. A point made during a decent opening in which his nephew spins some tales about his uncle.Hercules [Dwayne Johnson] and his group of fellow warriors have been fighting for a long time. Have pasts they are haunted by. And are thinking about it possibly being the time to settle down. One last job for a King [John Hurt] might be what they need in order to achieve that aim. But their last battle turns out to be not quite what they expected. Can Hercules rediscover who he is in time to save the day?This is what they call a sword and sandal movie, and as such it strives for realism over fantasy. All the battle sequences do try hard to look like realistic combat. The whole film as well has a washed out and sandy look to it.It does try to be both grim and gritty and look at the horrors of combat. Consider the difference between a myth and it's reality. Put the lead character on a hero's journey, as he has to come to terms with past trauma and move forward. And do a bit of humour as well. In many ways it tries to do a lot of what the cult tv Hercules series of the 1990's did [not a show all may be familiar with, thanks to somewhat limited uk exposure. If not, check it out, as it was great]. But this being a blockbuster movie means it doesn't have quite the intelligence or the time to manage that. Thus it is a little disjointed in tone and can shift between things.The supporting cast are all pretty good, but John Hurt as the King and Ian McShane as one of Hercules' band, a seer who is highly conscious of his own mortality, do steal the show from all around them thanks effortlessly strong acting. The latter managing some very nice self depreciating humour as well.But this isn't a bad film at all. It's a capable production. It's got good spectacle and fight scenes and a decent cast. It also manages to shift gear slightly for the final act just when it needs to. It allows John Hurt to be a bit more than wise old kindly gentleman, and he does make the most of the material he gets.Ultimately, it's a good bit of entertaining escapism.So whilst it's not perhaps quite the movie it could have been, it's a fun watch if you're in the right mood. So for that, it's well worth a look.There is one single bit of strong language. Which runs for eleven minutes.All of these, thanks to some good interviewees, in particular Dwayne Johnson, are pretty good and worth watching.

Never seen this film before and I thought I had seen all the films The Rock has made. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have a few different variations of Hercules, Remember watching this show back in the late 70's (Cartoon)

Zunächst einmal verwundert es mich auch (ebenso wie andere Rezensenten/innen), dass dieser Film dermaßen viel unverdiente Häme einstecken muss, denn die Grundidee dieser neumodischen Herkules-Interpretation (basierend auf der Graphic Novel-Reihe "Hercules: The Thracian Wars") bietet nicht nur eine clevere Story, eine bessere Darstellerriege, gelungenere Action und Schlachtsequenzen und insgesamt eine erheblich professionellere Präsentation als z. Bsp. Liongates trashiger "The Legend of Hercules", welcher ebenfalls vor kurzem erschienen ist, nein, meiner (subjektiven) Meinung nach, schlägt er sich sogar vorteilhafter als die beiden "Kampf/Zorn der Titanen"-Teile und "Krieg der Götter". Gewinnt also gewissermaßen gegenüber allen BigBudget-Movies die sich in den letzten Jahren um die griechische Mythologie gedreht haben. Warum?Weil er schlicht und ergreifend viel mehr Spaß macht!Man kann Brett Ratner-Filme mögen oder nicht, sicher ist, der Mann hat nicht nur Gold produziert, aber mit "Hercules" hat er sich definitiv keinen Fauxpas geleistet. Im Making-Of verrät er, dass er schon immer davon geträumt habe ein "Sandalen Epos" zu inszinieren, den Wunsch hat er sich hiermit erfüllt. Genauso Dwayne Johnson. In zahlreichen Interviews ließ er schon verlautbaren, dass es eine Herzensangelegenheit für ihn war in die Rolle des berühmten Halbgottes zu schlüpfen. Wenn man sich seine Filmvita so anschaut und im Hinterkopf weiß, dass er auch schon der "Scorpion King" war, erscheint das nur konsequent, schließlich besitzt "The Rock" inzwischen den Joker ein begehrter Publikumsmagnet zu sein. Als er von dem Projekt hörte, war er sofort Feuer und Flamme und was soll man als Zuschauer anderes dazu schreiben außer: man sieht ihm in jeder Einstellung an wie sehr er Bock auf diese Figur hatte! Herkules erwacht durch ihn (zumindest auf der Leinwand/im Heimkino) zum Leben.Das Außergewöhnliche an dieser Heldenodyssee (im Gegensatz zu sonstigen Schema F-Hollywood Heldenepen) ist allerdings, dass Herkules nicht alle Aufgaben und Gegner im Alleingang löst und plättet. Ihm steht eine gemischte Gruppe aus verschiedenen Charakteren zur Seite, die ihn bei seinen "Heldentaten" unterstützen und u. a. dafür sorgen, dass sein Ruf bis in den hintersten Winkel der antiken Welt getragen wird. Auch verdingen sie sich als Söldner und ziehen nicht selbstlos von Dorf zu Dorf und retten hilflose Maiden vor finsteren Schergen aus dem Tartaros. Im Grunde hat man hier eine altertümliche Version der "Guardians of the Galaxy" oder eine Konstellation wie aus einem (Pen & Paper) Rollenspiel.Die Gruppendynamik tut dem Film gut und die Charaktere sind alle hervorragend besetzt. Allen voran glänzt Ian McShane's Amphiaraus, der beständig seinen (dramatischen) Tod voraussieht und welcher dann einfach nicht eintreten will.Ingrid Bolsø Berdal mimt die Amazonenkriegerin Atalanta mit herber Schönheit und einer beeindruckenden Fitness. Böse Zungen könnten nun wieder behaupten, Atalanta sei nur das Eye-Candy (die Bauchfrei-Rüstung... nun ja, ist ein Argument... aber nett ausschauen tut's trotzdem, nischt wahr?) oder die starke Quotenfrau, aber ich finde, dass wäre gegenüber der Figur wie der Schauspielerin unangemessen. Die Rolle ist vernünftig geschrieben, macht Sinn und ist ordentlich dargestellt. Sie hat absolut ihre Berechtigung in der Handlung. (Zudem werten attraktive Amazonen einen ausschließlich männerdominierten Film immer auf :-) )Keinesfalls möchte ich an dieser Stelle Autolycus vergessen, der von dem erfahrenen Rufus Sewell meisterhaft verkörpert wird und welcher der Figur, trotz der wenigen Szenen, eine wunderbar sarkastische Note verleiht. Aksel Hennie's Tydeus funktioniert ebenfalls gut, wenngleich dieser nur mit seiner Mimik arbeiten kann um Emotionen zum Ausdruck zu bringen.Auch der übrige Cast weiß zu überzeugen, angefangen von John Hurt, über Joseph Fiennes und Reece Ritchie.Einzig Irina Shayk ist mir ein Rätsel und weshalb sie so groß auf dem Cover prangt. Sie hat nur ein paar Sekunden Screentime, spricht kein Wort Dialog und ist darüber hinaus zwar wichtig für Herkules Origin-Story, hat aber sonst keinen bedeutenden Stellenwert. Ergo ein ganz offensichtliche Cover-Lockstrategie um etwaige männliche Kundschaft zum Kauf zu animieren.Neben der unterhaltsamen Abenteurergruppe fährt der Film imposante Schauwerte auf. Selbstverständlich ist man heutzutage schon Einiges gewohnt und visuell nur noch schwer zu begeistern. Die CGI-Effekte der mythologischen Monster sind teils gut, teils mittelprächtig getrickst, nichtsdestotrotz gelingt es dem Regisseur und seinem Team hier eine recht authentische frühzeitliche Welt zu inszinieren mit einem schönen Thrakien und großartig choreografierten Schlachten. Hier prallen etliche Feinde auf Phalanxen, der Formationskampf wird bildgewaltig eingefangen und die Klingen schlitzen gar nicht so unblutig. Die Musikuntermalung ist entsprechend heroisch und manchmal leicht rockig. Absolut stimmig, aber kein Ohrwurm-Score.Fazit: Starkes Action-Entertainment mit einem gut aufgelegten Cast, der die Legende um den Göttersohn des Zeus entmystifiziert und ihm einen etwas realistischeren Anstrich verleiht.

Quite a different take on a somewhat well known legend. Both unusual and entertaining.All in all, very enjoyable.

The Rock rockt's. Der Film räumt auf witzige Weise mit diversen Mythen auf, eingebettet in eine Herkules- Geschichte. Schön anzusehen!
