We use this item often. The scales do not fly all over - they stay on the fish or the scaler.

Q: How well does this work on small scaled fish?

If it's already scaled, why do you need to re-scale it? And how small a fish? (we used it for bass)

Q: How many inches is this scaler?

The total length of the fish scaler is 7 1/2 inches. The wooden handle is 4 inches and the metal part is about 3 1/2 inches from the base to the tip. It's really a great scaler. the widest point of the metal part is 1 3/8 inches. hope that helps.

Q: Does it work well for larger fish scales, for example a 2 ft snapper. Some of the scales are size of a nickel.

Works on carp-Don't see why it wouldn't.
