Superb Book - Teacher's bible
I was having a hard time being a new teacher in an international school in Singapore, and was searching the internet for resources on how to teach my students better so that they can excel in school when I chanced across this book. I brought the book on impluse to learn how I can transform my class of underperforming students to a class of students who excel in ICT. To my surprise and delight, this book provides EXACTLY what I need to learn to do to manage my class better. Buying this book is one of the best investment I ever made, and it provides me with insights on how top teachers across US is helping their students cope with their studies. I am now applying the concepts in this book to my class, and remains optimistic that the students CAN and WILL improve.

A Game-Changer for Teachers
I train teachers for a living, and Teaching as Leadership is a game-changer for our field. Farr takes the overwhelming process of becoming an effective teacher and breaks it into six strategic steps--set big goals, invest students and their families, plan purposefully, teach effectively, increase effectiveness, and work relentlessly--and offers an abundance of tactical resources (both in the text and in the INCREDIBLE online supplements) to help teachers take these steps in their own classrooms. The book is not only a clear what-to-do, but additionally, drawing heavily on both rigorous research and powerful anecdotes from great teachers (a potent combo), Farr makes a clear case for why great teachers take these steps and how they change kids' lives.

All Education programs should be so succinct
As a newly certified teacher in BC, and a Teach for America applicant, I stumbled upon this book, written by a former member of the Corps. It lays out a very sensible, easy to grasp program to closing the achievement gap in America's schools. Every teacher - new AND old - should read it; if for no other reason than to remind yourself why you're a teacher.

Not for Teachers seeking specific strategies
I bought this after reading (devouring, actually) "Teach Like a Champion" which provided tons of great strategies for teaching in today's classroom, holding students to a high standard and truly effective teaching. I was hoping for more great ideas from this book, but find it to be dry and lacking in any real strategies. It is also focused on teachers in low income schools but does not address issues like ADHD, which surprised me since the disorder is so prevalent these days.My personal opinion is to pass on this one and buy Teach Like a Champion for real help in teaching.

A must read for all teachers
I couldn't put the book down. The principles of this book should be taught in credential programs. Principals should ensure that teachers possess (or are willing to work toward) the ideas listed in this book. A wonderful book that will change your teaching practice in a positive and dramatic way.

Essential for all teachers: new and experienced
A Teach First ambassador brought in this book on my interview day, recommending it to us, and read out a quote that really struck a chord with me:We cannot rest until each of us would be satisfied with randomly assigning our own children to any public school in the nation. This book is brilliant. It is full of experiences from people teaching on the Teach for America programme as well as some really useful advice. It is very accessible and a delight to read. I feel a lot of the ideas are practical and could envisage them working. It really complements the ethos of Teach First and I cannot recommend it enough. I can see this being a book I return to again and again. There is also a case study called Ms Lora's Story, which is available, for free, at [...]. This is well worth a read. The site also offers lots of free resources, including step-by-step guides and common pitfalls that new teachers encounter. I particularly like the Teaching as Leadership rubric, which gives an objective measure of teacher performance, continuously relating to the six principles mentioned earlier. My favourite thing about this book (well one of my favourite things) is the `Next Questions' sections at the end of every chapter. The questions are really interesting and thought-provoking, helping to consolidate the information contained within the chapter. My issue with the chapter, work relentlessly, is that I do not believe it explains how effective teachers can sustain such a high workload over time. However, it does contain an excerpt from the book `Seven Habits of Highly Effective People' by Stephen Covey, which has now been added to my reading list!Even though I didn't enjoy the last chapter as much as the others, this is such a valuable book. It was easy to read, enthusiastic and relevant for anyone embarking upon the Teach First journey (or any teaching journey for that matter). A must have for my bookshelf.
