RIsky venture to the Old South for Lucky Luke
This recent Lucky Luke book, now available in English, makes the audacious decision to take the famous cowboy down to the Old South to tackle racism and slavery head-on. For a North American audience, it can make for uncomfortable reading. Can you really address slavery and the KKK in a humorous way in kid-friendly comics? And in today's polarized cultural landscape? For the Europeans who are writing and drawing this story these issues may seem somewhat exotic and distant, but for people closer to home their legacy is all too raw and relevant. Lucky Luke's heart is in the right place, of course, as you would expect, and this volume does have great art and some funny moments ... but overall the edgy subject matter outweighs a lot of the entertainment value.
