Should last a long time. No assembly; just adjust the leg length. It's bamboo, but looks kind of like knotty pine or something. Can be used as an end table or coffee table. Size and versatility-- you can adjust the leg length, short if you're going to use it in bed, longer for the floor. I adjusted the legs to maximum height, and it works great for me two ways. I can use it as a little coffee table if I sit on the couch, or if I'm sitting on the floor I can easily get my legs under it in either cross -legged or straight position. The large surface, uncluttered by any stupid mousepads or tablet slots, can be used for laptop, mouse, phone, whatever. You can put a large laptop on it with a mouse if you want. I eat off it, work with a laptop, watch Netflix with an Ipad on a stand (sitting back a couple feet or on the couch), put my phone on a stand and use a Bluetooth keyboard for texting. All of this either on the couch or the floor. If you were to adjust the legs to a short length and use it in bed, I don't know. It's pretty big, and sort of heavy for that.
