Easy Jazz Easy Blues Joe is Early Rockin'

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2016*

I purchased The Boss of the Blues - Joe Turner - Sings Kansas City Jazz the same time as VERY BEST OF BIG JOE TURNER. I am a little surprised how quickly I realized enjoying the 1956 Blues - Kansas City Jazz recording better than the BEST OF BIG JOE TURNER. Simply put, the BEST OF just has too much of that same "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" early hit, rock-n-roll, teen anthem song-sound. Heck, it says right in liner notes "Flip, Flop, and Fly" is basically the same song done on purpose to garner another quick-fix-hit. Even the song "Honey Hush" Joe Turner wrote almost a year before "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" sounds similar, especially, when Joe's starts his (still entertaining, smile inducing Hammy vocals) "Hi Ho ... Hi Ho Silver..." repetition. It sure sounds like a "Shake ... Rattle and Roll" precursor to me.But, don't misunderstand. The rhythm and blues roots of jazz to rock-n-roll music are here in force led by Big Joe's easy-wonderful, yet booming voice in synch with solid horn section. There is even an Elmore James guitar riff on Turner's own "TV Mama".These ears could not help but wonder if "Hide and Seek" (1955) inspired Buddy Holly's "Oh Boy".I also love hearing early versions of songs made popular by someone else. Here Big Joe sings a real nice, sad version of "Sweet Sixteen" (Nice piano emphasis) that B.B King would eventually make famous."Midnight Special (Train)" JOE sings with his usual strengths a good decade before John Fogerty displayed his blues-gravelly voice. The 5 plus pages of liner notes are good and historic pointing out that Big Joe's "Tomorrow Night" was a precursor to The Shirelles "Will You Love Me Tomorrow."This is all good for Big Joe Turner fans and history buffs in general. Easy jazz easy blues early rockin'. 4 stars easy.Post script: Of the 46 plus minutes of music (16 songs) on VERY BEST OF BIG JOE TURNER it is the song taken from The Boss of The Blues - Sings Kansas City Jazz "You're Driving Me Crazy" that is actually longer than 3 minutes (oh boy). It runs a 'lengthy' 4 minutes and 10 seconds.

the blues came falling down on me as it had never done before.” “You just couldn't sit still! You had to move...”

You cant sit still when Big Joe lays it on you. I cant say it any better than Belgian blues fan George Adins(Big Joe recorded some of the songs on this album using "The Broomdusters" as back-up)Muddy Waters took the Belgian blues fan George Adins to see The Broomdusters play in Chicago in 1959, Adins recalled...“Although the place was overcrowded, we managed to find a seat close to the bandstand and the blues came falling down on me as it had never done before.” “You just couldn't sit still! You had to move...”Adins also witnessed The Broomdusters at 'Alex Club' in West Side Chicago where... “they always played for a dance audience and they made the people jump. "Bobby's Rock" was at that time one of the favorite numbers with the crowd and The Broomdusters used to play it for fifteen minutes and more. You just couldn't stand that hysteric sound coming down on you. The place was rocking, swinging!

    If You Dig Old R & B...

*by O***N on Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2014*

...get all of Big Joe's tracks that you ain't yet got! I'm 74 and grew up on all the great R & B artists. Big Joe Turner during that era - the early 50's - was among the 5 greatest, if not the greatest. And the sides on this CD is proof of that statement. Get the Very Best of Big Joe Turner without further delay, and I'm sure you'll understand where I'm comin' from.
