Works great and easy to install, but you may need to tweak your tv settings.
I have been using wireless speakers with my tv since we switched from tube tv's all those years ago. They aren't surround sound, they just give me more volume than flat screen tv's do. I just bought a new Samsung 4K Ultra Smart tv and it didn't have a traditional audio output for my speakers. It has something called digital audio out (optical). Translation it has digital instead of analog(traditional) output so the normal red & white cables that would plug into your tv won't work alone. That's where this little box comes in. It's really simple to install. It comes w a cable that is identical on both ends. One end plugs into the digital audio out port on the tv and the other end plugs into this box. Then u plug your traditional red & white analog cables into the correlating red and white ports on this box. Just a heads up the box does need to be plugged into an electrical outlet. Once I connected everything it seemed to be working well, but then I switched from satellite to blue-ray and my speakers stopped playing sound and started making static sounds instead. I followed the instructions another reviewer posted about tweaking the tv settings. Go to settings, then sound, then sound output and choose audio out optical--then go to expert settings---HDMI Audio Format=Bitstream, then go to Audio Format=PCM. When I followed those instructions my speakers worked in every input, blue-ray, fire stick etc. However, the speakers on the tv no longer worked. We prefer to have both the tv speakers and the wireless speakers working together so I went back to the sound settings and sound output and switched it back to tv speaker from audio out/optical and the sound now comes out of the tv speakers and my wireless speakers so I have total control. It took longer to write this review than to hook it up and make the changes. I'm very happy to have my speakers back after 2 days without them. This box is exactly as described on Amazon.

Does what it's supposed to do at a great price
I'm using this little DAC so I can get the audio from my Roku to my old Denon receiver. I use the optical digital output from my TV into this little box and a regular stereo interconnect into my receiver. This DAC only handles PCM stereo, so you have to make sure the TV is set to output PCM stereo from the digital output. Doing this varies with different makes of TV, but the control is there in the audio settings, you just have to find it for your TV. Once hooked up with the proper TV settings, this works like a charm. The output is a little low, meaning that I have to turn up the receiver's volume a bit more than when listening to the output from my cable box, but that's what volume controls are for. Sound is pretty good, especially for a $14 DAC. The included optical cable is a "throwaway" quality item; mine was almost impossible to get into the converter itself and broke when I tried removing it. Considering a good quality optical cable would cost almost as much as this DAC, I don't really see that as a problem. Just realize you might want to order a better quality optical cable along with this DAC if you don't already have one. The included power supply is a plus and seems to be of good quality. Overall, this item does the trick and costs only $14. What more could you ask for?

Works with Netflix and Prime! BUT cable ends fit poorly into the ports
First things first - It works with both Netflix and Amazon Prime. I've seen a few reviews here where people are saying that it does not. But I am happy to report that they both work fine with my setup. I purchased this product to convert the optical audio out from a new TV to my analog Sennheiser HDR120 HiFi wireless headphones. The old TV had RCA out jacks for sound but the new one had only a 3.5 mm headphone jack and the optical out port. And I need a solution that allows for both headphones and the TV speakers to work simultaneously. This does the job nicely. The only problem I have is the connectors on the optical cable provided do not sit tightly in either the port on the converter or the port on my TV. The connections are loose and the slightest touch can knock them out. I'm not sure if I just got the wrong cable or if this is to be expected. But the connectors do not plug well into the ports on the device or my TV. And -yes- I do have them plugged correctly in the ports. The connectors just seem like they are too small or are not shaped exactly right for the ports. UPDATE: 12/3/2019 - Seller contacted me to advise that the small plastic caps on the ends of the connectors are protective coverings and needed to be removed. Since this was my first time using optical audio-out connections, I thought those caps were just a part of the cable connection. They are so tiny it was easy to miss. Anyway, I removed the caps with some tweezers and now the cable fits nice and snug into both ports! Revising my earlier rating to 5 stars now. Thanks!

Works great for LG OLED TV and old PC speakers.
Works great for my use, would be 5 stars, if it wasn't for 2 minor complaints I have. The power cable is pretty short, forcing me to have the device hanging, whereas, I'd rather it not be hanging off of the cables, suspended in the air. My next complaint is, the power adaptor has a bright red, LED, which lights up, it's unnecessary, and annoying. The device itself, already has one annoying, bright red LED, I don't see the need for one, on the power adaptor also. I used this, in conjunction with, my old computer speakers, which I've used over the years, as a poor man's surround sound. They are a simple 2 speakers and a bass box, meant for PC, this converter, works like a charm. This works with my 55" LG OLED TV, curved model (1080p version). So if you where wondering, yes it works with these OLED TV's, with webOS. You will, however, have to go into the settings on the TV, and turn on the option for surround sound speakers, you'll see options for HDMI Audio and stuff. The only annoyance (with the TV), is that by doing so, it cuts off the TV Audio, while this option for the optical Audio is on. This is good for most people, just that, I used to use the TV speakers as if it where a center channel. Besides this, it works fine with my old PC speakers and bass box. I just wish, these converter's, didn't require their own power, but nothing we can do about that. I can also confirm, this works perfectly fine, with my Xbox One. Plugged directly into the console, it works great. Doing it this way, I avoided losing TV speaker, audio. Price is good, does what I needed it to do, besides the points I mentioned above, solid device, id recommend to anyone, who needs to convert an old setup, to Optical Audio.

Solved two problems and also improved the sound!
This was purchased because we have an older video projector that does not provide an audio output, and our new Blu-Ray player does not provide analog audio output. Luckily, it has an optical output. Our findings are as follows: 1) The sound quality through this unit is better than any device we've previously owned. This is hooked up to a stereo amplifier and two large floor-standing 3-way speakers with 15-inch woofers. The high frequencies are crisp and perfect; the bass is wall-shaking if we turn it up. The high quality of the sound was a very pleasant surprise! The dialogue clarity and frequency response sound better than the local movie theater! 2) Another unexpected benefit: previously, our video projector had a processing lag that caused the picture to be a fraction of a second after the sound. (This seemed to be about 50 to 100 milliseconds, which some people can notice and some cannot.) However, this audio unit adds a tiny processing delay to the sound, which means that the picture and sound are now exactly synchronized again! The effect is just perfect! All in all, it is just amazing that this little unit solved a problem and also improved the sound quality above anything we've had before. As other reviewers have noted, pay attention to the tiny plastic caps on the optical cable. The optical cable won't plug in unless you carefully remove those protective caps.

Working well so far! Update: dead
I purchased this since my Hisense TV only has a 3.5mm headphone jack to run to the stereo (it's pretty old, like, 1987, but, still works well with the Bose 301's) with RCA type composite cables. The sound was overly loud and bassy. Since I run an HDMI to the soundbar, I can use the optical to this device, then out to the stereo receiver, sounds a whole lot better now, and I can hear the difference when flipping between this and the output from the headphone jack. It also makes a huge difference since the Bluray runs to the TV through HDMI, and the sound output comes from the TV. Movies and music CDs sound a lot better for those times I want to listen on stereo. And TV shows. Haven't tried with sports, but, I assume much better. Not that I'll use it this way, but, I have a second Bluray around as a spare, tried it with the digital coaxial out to the device. Had to turn TV off, since goes to same audio input on stereo, also sounded rather good, so, yes, you can have 2 things hooked up at same time. April update: I've only used it 6-7 times since I got it, went to use it, all I get is buzzing now. It's not the optical cable, works fine when connected to soundbar. Not the RCA cable, works fine with other things, even tried switching it out. Not the input, connecting two different Blueray players sounds fine. Should work more than 6-7 times, right?

great audio converter for a small price!
I've installed these on multiple OLED TV's that only have an optical audio out port. They've worked wonderfully in our use case to connect to older sound systems that use RCA ports. It comes with a power adapter and an included optical cable if you don't have one. For the price it offers a great experience and easy solution for any audio conversion needs.

Every new UHD TV has nuances - there are so many technical considerations here!
I used to watch TV with headphones in the early morning while on my treadmill - until I bought a new LG 43" UHD TV that doesn't have a headphone jack. After doing my research, I was so excited about this converter! Well, it arrived today. I hooked it up and it instantly made this annoying helicopter sound (like some of the reviewers have described). The Dish HDMI input doesn't like it! So when I disconnected the HDMI and watched an on-air channel, my Bose external computer speakers worked just fine - yee hah - no bad noises! But they wouldn't respond to the TV remove (couldn't mute or adjust volume up or down) - no matter what TV settings I used. I read a lot of the Amazon reviews on this product and disabled Dolby, which should have solved any problems. It didn't. There are so many crazy technicalities involved in this lovely digital revolution of ours. I really like my Skull Candy headphones with the "antiquated" 3.5 mm analog jack. I'm a techie, but this has kicked my butt. ::::: Revised review :::::::: It is now one day later. I tried hooking up the digital-to-analog converter to the TV again today and it worked. Now I can use my Bose speakers - and plug my headphones into it (which shuts off all other speakers) and the headphones actually work. However, I still don't have control of volume and the mute button via the TV's remote control when using this 'TOSlink digital audio to analog 3.5mm conversion', no matter what I do. For now, this will have to do. The Musou converter works, but it isn't the perfect solution to my problem.

Plug & Play audio adapter
This item was delivered as promised without any damage to the package. Installation was easy on my Samsung TV. Plugged one end of the adapter cable in to the fibre op audio out port on the TV and the other end of the adapter provided a place to plug in the RCA jacks coming from my headphone base. All in all installation was quick and easy. Works like a charm.
