Is there a bottom tray or is the bottom open (for stuff to leak out when raised or tipped?).

There is no bottom to this compost bin. I have it on a concrete base for ease of shovelling the soil out, when composted. Very useful item.

How on earth do you fit the lid?

quite difficult but lid in place and give a short sharp tap with a soft faced mallet

How long does it take to compost the waste?

Depends on a lot of things, what your composting, the temperature etc. But if you do the 50/50 ratio of greens and browns then around 6 months maybe longer. Best to get two for the different stages of compost.
