I opened it yesterday to attach charms & it is totally tarnished. What can I use to clean it?** A: The best sterling cleaner is 3M brand, Scotchgard Tarnishield. (Make sure you are purchasing the one for Sterling as they also make products for copper, brass, etc & those will not work on Sterling). I have polished a ridiculous amount of sterling in my life and have tried everything and this is far and away the best. Do not buy something you dip it in as you will strip away the seal on the piece and you’ll do more damage to it and it will tarnish faster and faster. The 3M product is a thick product, you don’t need a ton, but it’s a little messy so I like to work over either some plastic or paper towels so I don’t get it everywhere & I wear rubber gloves because that tarnish comes off and gets on you & in your nails. Use an old terry cloth towel that you will continue to use in the future as your “silver polishing towel” (not the kind that is a velour towel, just a regular terry cloth towel). Smear the 3M product on it and let it sit for 30 sec to a min, depending on how tarnished it is (don’t let it dry), and then start to work with the towel to work the tarnish loose. Work from one area to the next until your entire piece is clean and shiny. Once it’s clean and shiny, run it under the hottest water you can stand to hold it under the running water for about 10 seconds making sure the entire piece gets that super hot water on all parts of it. This creates a new seal that will help to keep it clean for a little longer. Then take another soft cloth and buff it to a shine (you may continue to pull additional tarnish off at this point, so this should also be a cloth you don’t care about). I use 2 bathroom size hand towels to do the cleaning and the buffing with. Once you feel it’s dry, let it air dry a bit longer, just so you aren’t putting it away with any moisture. To store: put your jewelry, silverware, trays, anything you have - wrap in tissue paper and then into something airtight - ziploc bag, tupperware, etc. This keeps the moisture out and will prevent tarnish for a very long time. If you use the pieces, try not to be touching constantly (that’s harder w/jewelry I know, but your fingerprints are mostly water, which means they will cause pieces to tarnish faster. Don’t wear in the pool, shower, etc. When you see signs of tarnish - repeat the signs above - waiting for something to get really tarnished means it will be that much harder to remove it. Also, the cloths that you used, you can wash them, but the tarnish will permanently stain them. I still like to start with white ones because it’s easier to see where I have new vs old each time. A lot will come out in the wash, but they will never be clean (or white) again no matter what color you start with, but they can always be used forever as your silver polishing cloths. The terry cloth does a lot of the work for you, if you have something that has very deep grooves you can’t get into, you can use a VERY soft toothbrush (like a baby’s toothbrush) nothing stiff so you don’t scratch the silver.
