Here is the test I put it to: I had an upcoming hip replacement, and my friend who offered to stay with me and take care of me and my house and my critters absolutely *detests* cats (I know, right?) so you can imagine how he feels about dealing with scooping litter. Now, this same friend had taken care of me and mine a few months earlier, when I broke my wrist and needed surgery (yes, in my house 2017 is the Year of the Surgery), and yeah, he really grumbled about the cat - and especially the cat box - a lot. I mean a LOT. So, in preparation for him taking care of me this time, I bought the Litter Genie, hoping against hope that it would appease him. Well, guess what? He still doesn't like the cat, but now he doesn't hate taking care of the litter! He has remarked *several* times how much easier it is with the Litter Genie! For that alone I would have paid much more than the measly $17! (Shhh...don't tell them that.) - It *really* contains the smell! Woohoo! - The scoop works *perfectly* with the Genie's orifice size. It's a pretty large scoop, so a smaller scoop would work well too. - This thing is made of plastic, so it's not going to have the precision fit and smooth mechanisms of your Jaguar. But hey, $17. The XL COULD hold more if there were longer bags, but litter genie doesn't sell any. I love the concept but I consider it serious false advertisement to claim a taller container will last longer with the same size bag. You can buy another brand of bags that have 21 ft long bags instead of the 14 ft length bags. They are Firik bags - fit the litter genie but are longer. I suggest you buy them. I do. Litter genie will probably delete this answer, but I prefer to tell the truth. I like the system, they should sell bags that fit what you pay for. **Q: how does it work** A: The product is okay and worth the price for the canister, but the refill bags are waaaaay overpriced! Pros: Pretty much comes assembled . Easy to use Cons: Refills are too expensive . Pulling out the bag takes a little practice . The scoop holder does not snap and hold into place . Awkward to open slide (takes two hands) . Awkward to open canister bottom (takes two hands) . Awkward to move around (takes two hands) . Awkward to pull down new bag (takes two hands) . Latch doesn't hold tight Now for my hacks to improve some features. 1. Place a weight in the bottom portion of the pail. Doing so will aid in the stability of product for opening bottom portion and pulling out the slide. This is a minor annoyance, but sometimes you just may not be able to use two hands all the time to perform some operations. 2. If you need to move your canister from room to room. You need to secure that cheap latch. Get yourself a couple a large size washer, a wingnut, and a screw. Make sure the screw fit the wingnut. Make sure the washer is large enough to cover the opening of the outside opening cutout. Drill a hole through the tab. Place a washer onto the screw. Push the screw and washer through the drilled hole. Place the second washer onto the screw. Thread the wingnut onto the screw. Now just tighten the wingnut and secure the top to the bottom. 3. Keep a used-up refill cartridge to use for wrapping a much less expensive bag around the cartridge. It's a little more inconvenient, but you can use other bags for a fraction of the cost of their product! 4. Place a "stick-up" on the underside of the top lid. I found if you remove the sticky tape from the stick-up, and replace it with a Velcro tab, then you can keep reusing the same stick-up holder. When you need to get a new stick-up just pull the scented product out and place it in the holder attached to your lid. 5. Buy a bag of small zip ties (4"). A bag cost about $5 bucks for 200. You can get 1000 for about $10 bucks on Amazon. Use the zip ties to close the ends of the bags. Before you go to cut your bag, place a z two zip ties about an inch or two apart. Zip them good and tight. Now cut the bag. The one you are disposing is good to go. The new pull-down bag is ready to be pulled down. I found you waste a smaller number of bags this way. 6. If you prefer to use other less expensive bags, I found wrapping the bag around the outside of the used cartridge works better and is more secure. That way the cartridge holder itself is holding the bag in place. Btw. There is a learning curve to finding the bag end. First time I pulled the bag down it was doubled up big waste! You must feel around to find the end. Once you find it, it is easy to pull out. Bottom line, yes, I recommend the product. Yes, the cartridges are overpriced, but they work. The canister does its job but is a little flimsy. This set-up works for me, because I live in a condo and making daily trips to the dumpster just wasn't getting it. Final thought: After reading all this nonsense, I realized I really need to get out more, maybe even find a girlfriend? Retired life must be getting to me! I know that mine definitely came with the scooper and holder on the side, though I threw out the scooper and just used my metal one as I like it better than the plastic option. I just ordered a bunch of refills at the same time as I ordered the box. The refills may seem pricey, but so long as you are smart about how you use them they will go a long ways. I have two cats and have to change out the bag maybe once every one and a half to two weeks **Q: any cheaper solutions than using the refills or?** A: We used the cartridges until we felt they were getting a bit pricy. We ended up searching for regular trash can bags to use. We've not found the perfect ones yet, but yes you can wrap the trash can bag around the empty cartridge and get it to work. I've started using doggie waste bags when I clean the litter, keep it twisted in the top part, wait until fill and tie it off every day or so and drop it down into the litter genie main compartment. Between the trash bag in place and the doggie bags, they both keeps the smell down. I don't think that the trash bags work as well as the cartridges did, but they are ok. The doggie waste bags are cheap and bought a case of them here on AMAZON inexpensively. The Litter Genie does indeed work but, the truth is that with that lip thing that I really do NOT want to have to clean to- this put my ugly container just ahead of it in workability. Yeah, the old one looks terrible but, on the other hand, it doesn't take expensive refills and doesn't give me something extra that I would have to clean. Since, technically I don't HAVE to have something that looks good (it's not placed out in the open), I guess the old one stays for now. So, why the 5 stars? Well, because, like I said before: Litter Genie is a great system, I just happen to have one that works just a little better FOR ME. So, that doesn't mean that it doesn't work or that it's a bad product and I refuse to dock stars from a decent system just because my lifestyle works better with something slightly different. That and, I'll admit that the off-label use that I've found for it is an absolute GOD SEND. See, I live mostly alone with the husband gone on business more often then not. Unfortunately, an injury has seriously reduced my ability to walk/stand right now and, of course, the dumpster is across the rather large apartment complex. This all means that taking out the trash on a daily basis just isn't needed (the bags just don't fill up that fast) and also, physically impossible for me. We also have no garbage disposal in the sink either. A girl still has to eat though and table/kitchen scraps do indeed happen. Well, needless to say that putting those scraps into the trash can indeed start to stink up the ENTIRE PLACE in just a few hours... Starting to see where this is going? ;) Yep. I was standing there with this actually pretty darned good storage/disposal system designed to hold in the stench so that you don't smell it that I just didn't need for the cats and a major problem with icky smelly stuff from me that I had no idea how to handle. And, thus, I did indeed intone the most infamous words in the English language: Why not? Worth a try. Usually, these words do indeed lead to disaster but, once in a while- once in a LONG while, they actually lead to something good (which is why we keep saying them) and yep, this was indeed one of those times. For kitchen/table scraps? This thing is PHENOMENAL. I LOVE IT. Now, so far, my method is to drop my morning coffee grounds in with whatever else to try to help (just in case) with odor control and I've always taken it out after a couple of days maximum but, so far, not even raw chicken bones has caused any kind of smell after a full 48 hours. Okay, granted. I haven't tried any longer than that so far for the stinkier stuff but- way I figure it? Even allowing me to wait until I get home from work the next night makes it worth the purchase because that means that I can take it out on a night when I'm not standing in front of the stove/walking around the kitchen for over an hour. :) I have also been able to put off the trash ALL WEEK with non-meat items in there and not a single whiff of stink. Other caveats is that I have only tried it with chicken bones and cooked fat from a steak so far. I also haven't tried it with fish either. Also, mentioned, I have been religiously putting my coffee grounds in there to mix with whatever else to (hopefully) help with the odor control.
