Is he just supposed to balance on top of the stand or does it lock him into place?

It locks him into place, but he will have a small range of movement from the ball joint. It was very hard to get the stand attached to the figure. I ended up heating the stand and still had to use a couple taps with a hammer to get it in.

Is the baron the same size as the other mcfarlan dune 2021 figures (paul, duncan, etc.) or a larger scale?

He is 12 inches. The other figures are 7 inches.

What is the best way to get the figure on the stand?

It is very difficult. I put Vaseline on the round end that will insert into the Baron and then folded cardboard to about 3 thickness and placed it against my palm to protect my hand. Shoving against the rod with the cardboard I was able to muscle it in place. Good luck.
