Huge, memorable, great JRPG
Wow, this was a HUGE game. I finished Star Ocean Till The End of Time in 228 hours, over a few months. Overall, I would call this a classic, epic Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG), with a great story, great characters, and an amazingly large level of detail in things like item creation, size of dungeons, weapons/items/monsters... this game is big and deep in all areas.Although the theme is somewhat outer space sci-fi, there is a significant portion of the game played on primative worlds, and the use of swords, armor, magic, etc., like we are used to in many RPG's is the predominant theme here. If you are a big fan of Final Fantasy games, you will feel pretty "at home" here. The story, without giving it away, is ingenious and will have you thinking.I loved the characters. You eventually fill out your party with 8 characters. You can use 3 characters at a time in fights, and between fights you can freely change your order by substituting. Of your 8 characters, 6 are fairly automatic, and you choose the last 2 permanent members from 4 alternates. This is good, because it allowed me to avoid having the two characters I disliked most in my permanent party, and it allowed me to keep my favorite character, Nel, permanently. The voice acting for the characters is among the best I have ever heard on an RPG. In particular, Nel, Fayt, and Cliff are suberbly done. The voice acting for Nel is the best I've ever heard in a game. The 8 characters include "tanks", spell-users, thief types, etc. There are lots of dungeons, lots of dungeon levels, and lots of monsters. You will do a lot of fighting in this game. The battle system is good. It is real-time battle, and you can alternate the view setting between an active, moving camera perspective and a solid, stationary battlefield (I preferred the latter). Like many JRPG's, combat is deep in detail and complexity, and heavy with flashy magic flashes and animation, but without the blood and gore you find on more Western-style RPG's. Although the characters are drawn anime-style, I got used to that quickly and it was not distracting. This game involved some grinding for levels and for treasure. A lot of grinding, in fact. I enjoyed it, but if that is not your thing, you might not enjoy it so much. The leveling advancement is fun, but it is also necessary to be ready for later stages of the game. Grinding is also necessary to acquire the gold needed for item creation.Item creation is a huge part of the game. You recruit and "sign" inventors, then create your own items and weapons in workshops around the world. I found the item creation in this game to be complex and time-intensive. It is rewarding when successful, and it becomes necessary enough that you can't really avoid it. It is a time sap, though. It gets somewhat fun when you get the hang of it, but wow, I did spend some significant time in the workshops. This aspect is probably most appealing to those who like deeper games and more complexity. If you prefer to tear through a game as fast as possible, the item creation will drive you batty. I had already bought the BradyGames Guide for this game, and through the item creation alone, I did so much page-flipping, I ended up wearing out the binding and putting the pages in a three-ring binder. The guide is recommended, although I'm sure there are online guides available that will work too. This is a complex, deep game. The graphics, cut-scenes, and music are all very good. Again, the voice acting and characters are excellent. If you are a fan of JRPG's, this is an epic classic that is not to be missed. I am very happy that I played it, it is one of my favorite games. 4.5 stars - a great game.

Best JRPG Combat I have ever played
tl;dr: If you like JRPGs, but hate the constant Random Encounters, then get this game!Story:While a bit slow paced (it's a JRPG people!), the ending is brilliant and actually poses some great philosophical questions about what is a soul and what it means to live and be alive.Characters:Fun and memorable. The american voice acting isn't amazing, but I find myself thinking their "Victory Phrases", but I'm a geek.TRAVEL:AMAZING!!! NO RANDOM ENCOUNTERS(REs)!!! That was my biggest issue with the Final Fantasy Seiries. I hated REs and in this game they are on the map as a single creature that you can slip past, or touch to fight (they move and will leap at you, but contact with them starts the battle).COMBAT:Once a battle is started, it becomes an arena style fight where your party of 3 can run around and attack. At any given time you are controlling one character, but can freely switch between who you are controlling. The AI that takes over for any non-player team members is really good and will even learn how you like to fight with that character (which is great for support characters). The fighting system all in all is easy to learn, but hard to master, which is the way it should be!Misc In-Game activities:Lots of fun to be had with the crafting system, not so much fun in the Bunny Races (you'll know when you get there and you'll really consider whether or not a particular inventor is worth the time and trouble).Music:rock/electronic.Not awful if you like symphonic metal, or electronic (like Dream Theater, but on a budget), but there are no sound cues that don't have an accompanying visual cue in the game, so you can mute the TV and listen to whatever. Conclusion:Best JRPG I have ever played! I got this when I was in high school in 2007 and I still enjoy it today in 2014. On one play though, I sunk 180+ hours and I'm not even a "completion-ist". Lots of content, tons of great gameplay!

Instant Classic
This is one of the best RPG games that I have played. Story line is execellent and unlike alot of games what you do in it well affect it at some point (mainly the endings). Character development is decent, similar is some aspects to "Legen of Dragoon" in that each character has their own set of abilities while at the same similar to the "materia" in "Final Fantasy VII" except that when mastered they keep it. It has what you'd expect in any RPG for characters one who's powerful, fast, spell caster, range fighter, and another who you can choose how you want it. It takes a little over 60 hours to beat depending on how complete you are. Graphics are good, playing it on PS3 does enhance them someone what and the game has a 5.1 surround sound option that truly uses the surround sound (example something coming over head would move from the back speakers to the front speakers). Also for those who find the game play to easy or to hard there is 4 levels of gameplay easy, normal, hard, very hard (in the game they are called "earth", "galaxy", "universe", and another that I won't spoil for those who have never played.

Another One of My Favorite Playstation Games
Another one of my favorite PS2 games. I consider this one of the best RPG titles for the Playstation 2, to ever be released.Unfortunately it doesn't have much replay value. Once you play it one time, it will be a while before you feel like playing it again. I did really enjoy it, so maybe sometime in 4 or 5 years, I'll go and play it again. But a lot of the fun of this game, is doing it for the first time, reading the story for the first time, and discovering the game for the first time. So any replay, is not going to be as good as the first experience of playing the game.
