Before first time use, scrape the outside striker plate!
Before 1st use, tighten the bottom black cap using a coin or something similar (I did this because some reviews reporting leaking). Second, fill the container with lighter fluid by unscrewing the top knob which is the "mechanical match" and filling completely so as to ensure that there is enough lighter fluid to completely drench the cloth on top of the mechanical match stick, place the mechanical match back into the container and screw on the lid. Third, and this is critical, ensure that all of the striker strip on the canister is completely cleaned off from any packaging materials, maybe wax (?) before attempting to use the mechanical match. I scraped off the striker strip with a letter opener. I scraped back and forth several times until I saw that the striker strip turned silver instead of the black as it arrived out of the packaging. This scraping took a minute or twos worth of work. After this, I removed the mechanical match from the container which had been soaking in the lighter fluid from earlier. I then scraped the mechanical match against the striker strip and saw it spark and on the second strike, the mechanical match lit perfectly. I then blew out the match and placed it back into the container and screwed on the cap. I repeated lighting the match many times thereafter and each time the match lights on the first stroke! Another tip to ensure proper use, the mechanical match tip should be used with the widest part being used to strike against the striker bar ( I say this because others have said it broke off and I'm guessing they weren't using the correct orientation of the match). This is a very cool product!

Neat little gadget.
Useful addition to your Keychain, camping/hiking supplies, or whatever. I haven't used mine much yet, but the instructions are a little unclear out of the box- it says "Please scrape off the black wax on the surface of flint strips for the first time use. This black plating and small contact area are both not good for spark making." which is true, but the "black wax plating" does not scrape off easily AT ALL. I tried several household items trying to do this and made the most headway with a pumice stone. Even that took quite some time and still didn't scrape it all off or really a whole lot. I just managed to get enough off to create a spark. Seems like this protective coating could be made to be easier to remove....My only other problem I've had is the fluid leaking out of the bottom of the bottle. There is a black plastic plug that screws into the bottom and it does not arrive sealed (or at least mine didn't.) though I was able to fix it (so far) once I was made aware of this. This set seems to be more decorative than functional (though it is functional), but I wouldn't purchase this set to depend on before setting out on an adventure. You're better off purchasing another brand for reliability and sturdiness.

It's a great tool.
This is a great addition to my camping gear. It's easy to use just make sure that it's not leaking at the bottom. My rubber gasket on the bottom screw was broken on one of them. I just rapped the screw with teflon tape and now it is great. When you get yours make sure you strike it a few times until the the striker on the side is silver looking , it had a protective coating on it. To change the wich or adjust it , just pull it straight out of the holder. It is kind of a pain putting it back in .

Hard to use.
First, They do work, and they do work well. They are THEORETICALLY easy to use, but in the same way that a flint and steel, or other tech-lite method of lighting a fire is theoretically easy. Dont get me wrong, I have gotten it to light plenty of times, and I really do like it. Once it lights, it holds pretty well until you blow it out, and its not going to disappear under a light breeze, but it may take a fair bit of work to get it lit, unless you have a lot of practice, have the wick just right, and have plenty of fuel in the tank.
