Level Up Your Life: How to Unlock Adventure and Happiness by Becoming the Hero of Your Own Story

A MUST READ if you feel like you're wasting time playing video games or watching TV
What a fun, new way to look at goal setting, habit building and bucket lists! Love it! I'm definitely a reader of "self help" books - time management, habit building, productivity hacks, etc. This book conveyed such a neat idea of turning your life into a real version of a video game. Okay, written out like that, the idea sounds a little, ummm, "nerdy." But the idea works. I've spent hours and hours playing video games, even when the game isn't as fun as when it was new, I was still playing to "level up" my character. I would justify my hours of playing by reminding myself that I worked hard at running my business all day, I worked out in the morning and my house was clean. So those evening hours I could spend any way I wanted. But I still felt a little guilty at wasting so much time on something that really didn't matter in the "long run." So I cut back my playing time and did something more productive in the evenings, but spending my evening working after my normal work day ended didn't make me feel better - it felt like a punishment. Sure I got projects finished quicker, but I wasn't having fun. This book turned my ideas around. It helped transform my thinking from "I have to" to "I get to." Now instead of spending hours staring at a screen, I'm learning new skills and having fun with it. In the book, there's an idea of quests and mini-quests. I made a mini-quest to hike to 10 waterfalls in 4 months. I've already seen 4, and it's only been three weeks. Instead of working out at the gym, I take a hike to see the sun rise over the mountains. Even working is funner. I feel like I'm living life to the fullest now. Of course, certain events led up to some of these changes, but Level Up Your Life helped put things into perspective and really pushed me to do more to enjoy life, create memories, learn new skills and grow both professionally and personally. On another note: I love sci fi and fantasy and the author incorporated some quotes and references, which added to my enjoyment. Not too much that is was distracting, but enough to convey a point. The books also incorporates science tests and facts about addiction and why so many people can get lost for hours either gaming or watching TV and then shows you how to put that knowledge to good use. I recommend this book to all of my friends who are frustrated about how much time they "waste." I'm not sure how well this book would be received by some one who hasn't played a video game before but I'm sure they could find something valuable.

Bringing the fun into challenging yourself
I have read a lot of books geared for those who want to make improvements in their lives. Many have been inspirational, but few have contained actual actionable steps. Level up your life is one of those books. The part that spoke to me most was the Cautionary Tale of the Underpants Gnomes. In that chapter, Kamb explains that we often skip that messy middle step that allows us to get from point A to point B. We collect information, we tell ourselves "I can do that," but we don't actually get off the sofa and do something about it. I have a serious case of Underpants Gnome Syndrome and though I always knew it, I guess I needed someone to show me what it was I was doing.Kamb gives you step by step instructions on turning your life into a sort of video game, digging deep into why it is some of us spend hours playing video games and how we can use those addictions for achieving great things in life.I have been a member of the Nerd Fitness Rebellion for a few years now. Before joining, I was overweight, weak and depressed. Since joining the rebellion, I have achieved so much - I've run a marathon, I've lost 40lbs, I've become much happier - all thanks to Steve Kamb's advice. The advice in this book goes even further than fitness and shows you how you can improve almost any area of your life.I read this book cover to cover in one day, and as someone who gets distracted easily, this is an indicator into how approachable and fun Kamb's writing style is.I definitely recommend this for anyone who wants to take even the smallest steps in improving their lives. Anyone is sitting around right now, anxious to do something, but their not sure what. Anyone who is depressed because life didn't turn out the way they wanted. Anyone who is ready to improve, but doesn't know how.Seriously, read this book.

The Guidebook for Every Aspiring Hero
Let's be clear up front: The concepts in this book are nothing new. The advice you'll find within is similar to the things you'll find in other self-development books, but that's exactly what most of us need. Most of don't need some revolutionary new hack to make us 5% more efficient. We need the simple tips for success that have ALWAYS been true. And maybe a little more important - we need to hear this wisdom in a way that resonates with us and gets us excited to pursue goals and put in the hard work that will get you to where you want to be. And that's exactly what Steve has done here. He's taken the timeless principles for living a thriving life and made them relate-able for those of us who grew up playing video games and idolizing superheroes. And the principles he espouses really are timeless. No 30-day fixes. No false promises of easy money, fame, and success.Put in a little bit of work every day towards your goal, even when you don't feel like it? Yeah, yeah, I already knew that. But that's boring and hard. But what if you imagine that you are training your secret identity? What if every you treat the work like a Quest in a video game instead of something that you "have to do" because you think you should? Suddenly this thing becomes less of a grind and more exciting. If you are looking for domain-specific advice in fitness, travel, or music, this isn't the book for you. This is very much a self-development book and not a fitness, travel, or music book. This book is about high-level principles that you can apply to any area of your life, rather than the specific nitty-gritty information that you'll need. This book won't teach you how play the violin, but it will give you the principles that will help you do the research and put in the practice that you'll need in order to learn it.Finally: Although it's unwise to rely too much on motivation, this book functions as one hell of a boost to get off your butt and try that thing you've been wanting to try - whatever it is.

Exactly what you'd expect - nerdy self development
Well written, well formatted for kindle and packed full of interesting ideas. I've given it 4 stars as it doesn't seem that original - many of the chapters are similar to articles on nerd fitness and if you've read other books in this category such as Tim Ferriss' then you'll have seen some of the ideas before.I'd also have liked more in depth info on the writer himself as I think he's an interesting guy - I know from his site he's achieved a lot and it's a pity he doesn't go over that a bit more.I recommend this for fans of his site, people wanting a different paradigm for self improvement or just a well written and less usual take on the genre

If you are the target audience, this is just right.
I found this book, and the website that accompanies it, when I realised that I sometimes give more thought to what I'm going to do next in a game than I do with my real life. I wondered if anyone had a way of planning and developing the character you play all the time. And how to go about it. Turns out that other people think this way too. If you are a gamer (video or roleplaying), movie or comic book need, this book is your equivalent of a motivational, life changing, get out there and kick the world's butt book. We know the power of a good story, but a lot of us don't think we can live in one. Well, guess what? You can do what you want. You can get strong, try new stuff, beat the fear and self-doubt, and generally level up in real life, just like you can in a game. It's harder. But worth it. Steve is a likeable author who makes you feel like you might just be able to do this. He's already got me trying handstands and believing I could turn a scrawny body into something a little more fit for purpose. Worth a shot!
