You can see the makes on the ends where it has been on a lathe, but the lamination line is almost invisible. **Q: this came the other day. It has metal threads at the butt end of the handle. Any clues what it's for?** A: I don't know what you mean by metal threads at end, but this is a wood carver's mallet. it's used to tap a hand held carving gouge chisel, to wood carve cabinets, sculptures, custom doors, et cetera. **Q: Is this safe for use in the kitchen? Are there any stains or sealers that could transfer from the mallet to the food?** A: This is a wood tool, not a kitchen tool. I cannot imagine anyone using it in the kitchen for food production. Feels good in my hand, nice weight & heft for me. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice, balanced, easy to hold *by I***R on November 20, 2019* I bought this mallet for relief carving.I was surprised how long the handle portion of this mallet is. Even in my big hands, I can comfortably hold the mallet at the rear of the handle for powerful blows, at the front of the handle for light blows, or the mallet head itself for tapping. It is also nicely balanced.Other than the exposed lathe turning marks on the ends, which don't affect it's function, it is nicely finished. Even the Narex brand is stamped into the wood, not just laid over the top.
