## Description

If you've ever ordered and wire up a 9-DOF sensor, chances are you've also realized the challenge of turning the sensor data from an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer into actual "3D space orientation"! Orientation is a hard problem to solve. The sensor fusion algorithms (the secret sauce that blends accelerometer, magnetometer and gyroscope data into stable three-axis orientation output) can be mind-numbingly difficult to get right and implement on low cost real time systems. Rather than spending weeks or months fiddling with algorithms of varying accuracy and complexity, you can have meaningful sensor data in minutes thanks to the BNO055 - a smart 9-DOF sensor that does the sensor fusion all on its own! This sensor can output: Absolute orientation(Euler Vector, 100Hz and Quatenrion, 100Hz), Angular velocity Vector(100Hz), Acceleration Vector(100Hz), Magnetic Field Strength Vector(20Hz), Linear Acceleration Vector(100Hz), Gravity Vector(100Hz), and Temperature! Handy, right? Adafruit placed this very nice sensor on its own breakout, complete with 3.3V regulator, logic level shifting for the Reset and I2C pins, an external 32.768KHz crystal (recommended for best performance), and breakouts for some other pins you might find handy. Some soldering is required to attach the header to the breakout PCB, but its pretty easy work. Item Specifics Size: 20mm x 27mm x 4mm / 0.8" x 1.1" x 0.2" Header holes begin 4mm from the mounting holes Mounting Hole dimensions: 20mm x 12mm apart Uses I2C address 0x28 (default) or 0x29 Weight: 3g

Review: BNO055 worked right out of the box for model boat project! - My project required a magnetometer for direction. I purchased QMC5883l to achieve accurate directions for my model boat. No matter how many times I tried to calibrate it to get right heading no success. The BNO055 worked right out of the box with the self-calibration feature. Now my navigation system works as expected. The sensor does have a feature where you can do some calibrations if needed but mine worked right out of the box! Incredible HIGHLY RECCOMEND!
Review: Amazing device - If you are building a drone, flight computer, AHRS, or other project that requires accurate Eular or quaternion vectors, skip all the googling for equations and put this thing in "fusion mode" (see bno055 data sheet). The on board mcu will do all the heavy lifting work for you with great accuracy and speed! Another tip is to google up the Bosch videos and app notes rather than the hobby sites. They make it far easier to learn the chip and have a lot of libraries and instructions.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: As i understand, this sensor is good for orientation. but is also better for 3d position calculation, then the cheaper imus?**
A: The linear acceleration comes only relative to the Chip's coordinate frame. Getting absolute "earth-frame" acceleration requires 3D vector rotations (Adafruit might do this, but I did my own). Regardless, double integrating acceleration to get position has a lot of drift error. The fusion acceleration data (gravity removed) only updates at 100Hz. I tried integrating at 60Hz with no filtering and picking the chip up off the table caused a velocity drift of ~1m/s. Unusable! Getting accurate *position* readings for any IMU is an incredibly intricate science regardless of the IMU capabilities.

**Q: Does anybody know about the effect of vibrations on this sensor?**
A: This device is usually used in fusion modes which filter out noise, including vibration, to a significant degree in order to calculate absolute orientation and direction. You can access the sensors in raw mode to fully expose the vibration. The Adafruit website has example code and a link to the Bosh BNO055 data sheet.

**Q: Angular Orientation?
Does this chip allow me to get an angular orientation? Will it produce a live angle reading?**
A: Yes

**Q: Is it possible to connect this through USB to my computer?**
A: Not directly. You would need to connect it to something like an Arduino or Raspberry Pi, and write code for those processors to get the data into your PC.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Really nice full featured IMU with self-calibration
*by J***N on March 15, 2016*

This is an expensive IMU, there is no getting around that. Once it's set up though and you get your initial calibrations it'll correct itself fairly quickly. One of the only IMU's around that will give you absolute heading, especially with such a small amount of required code. I ended up writing my own Arduino library for this that worked really well. In the end I went with a different processor for my project. Regardless of that, I'd absolutely recommend this IMU even for the price, If you don't want to use the fusion modes though, you should get something else and pay about 1/3 the price.
