However you should not let this tank get that full that you would be relying on it if prevent spoilage anyway. That is the purpose of this gage. If the tank gets that full you are in trouble of an overflow anyway. **Q: Will this work with the small 5 gallon tote?** A: I don't think so because it screws into the vent hole in the tank, and the 5 gal apparently is vented through the fill cap. Maybe if you were filling the tote with a garden hose so the vent in the cap could be used, but from looking at the pictures, I don't think so ...... **Q: What keeps bobble from falling in** A: There is a plastic ring that keeps the float in the bobber from falling into the tank. However, the tank already came with this gauge (this was not noted in the tank description), so I wound up returning it. Having said that though, the gauge that came with the tank was exactly the same as this one, so I'm confident I can review it: My feedback would be that the gauge, which is a very basic foam float suspended in a clear plastic tube. It floats up the tube as the water level increases in the tank it is attached to. It works fine and is helpful in making sure you don't overflow the tank. A couple caveats to this are that the hole in the tanks that it mounts onto is also the only air vent hole in the tank, so if you screw it down tight, it will cause the tank to force air back out of the water fill hole, which is not what you want. On another reviewers suggestion, I loosened up the gauge just enough to let air escape around it and it worked fine. Also, It's suggested that you remove the gauge when you transport the tank and I think that would be a good idea to both keep water from sloshing up into the gauge tube and to reduce the risk of it being broken.I only gave this item 4 stars because of the price, which seems high for such a simple device, and because the one I received did not come in the clear plastic packaging it shows in the listing. Mine came in a plastic bag stapled onto the paper insert that comes inside the clear plastic package. This makes made me think I had been sent a gauge that had been returned and repackaged, which I did not appreciate since I had paid full price. One final issue was that when I returned it, Amazon was going to keep the shipping cost. I had to call them and explain that I had purchased it on their recommendation and that the waste tank listing did not say that the tank already came with the gauge.
