why is the girl in the picture using it to mix raviolis? have i been using musical instruments wrong my whole life?

Haha! That is a good question! I never noticed the picture when I bought ours. I suppose it shows the versatililty of the instruments and the creativity of the child! But really, keep using the instruments the way they were meant to be used. My grandson LOVES these. It's one of his favorite toys. And he's never used it to mix ravioli! :)

Could someone tell me how big the maracas are?

They are a little smaller than a standard band set. Really well made group of instruments.

Is this safe for kids who would chew on it? The metal and paint parts?

This set is more for ages 4 and up. I wouldn't let a child chew on it as it is made of metal & wood. The paint &/or wood could come off if it were chewed on. It's a great set for older little ones though!

What is the hollow instrument and how do you play it? The one with a handle, the ridges, and the slit that is paired with the stick.

A child can tap stick to hollow instrument, being hollow makes different sounds tapped in different spots. Rub stick up and down ridges similar to playing a wash board. Ideal for two small hands. My grandson and great nephews still go straight for this music box when they are together.
