as usual, i bought this brand because i trust Baar products. i purchased it not to swallow the capsules, but to have them to keep a few at work compact and protected to be able to open up and mix with water for use when needed. to test them out, i did open a couple up and mixed them with water. they gelled up properly and smelled great. so glad to have a few capsules at work, or to take with me on a trip. wish calcium and/or sodium bentonite clays came in this form. i have activated carbon capsules at work as well. buying pound-sized bags of powder is useful, but the contents can get tainted by germs or moisture or oxidation. i use slippery elm constantly with my cats (had only one cat until last week, 15-month-old Rochelle, and now have 4-month-old Delajune) and use it in loose form from a mylar bag. so for me, one really does not replace the other, but if i didn't use slippery elm bark often, i would only keep it around in capsule form and not buy the loose product at all.
