There are many pitfalls to get NRF24L01+ to work, ranging from software, hardware, electrical. I had lots of factors tripping me up. I ordered these mostly because of the 3.3v module, trying to eliminate dirty or insufficient power from the equation. In the end, once I sorted all my issues these (and my original smd) modules all worked. However these have dramatically longer range and obstacle penetration, much more than expected and compared with the smd built-in antenna ones. With these I can go up and down the street and still receive packets. There are few hacks/tricks that can boost that even further - Faraday cage with some copper or alum foil (see photo), better antenna/placement etc. Got the working fine on ESP32, ESP8266, Seeeduino Xiao, Arduino UNO, nothing stomps them.
