Can this be used with as a defense against bed bugs?

Definitely! While this alone won't get rid of them, knowing your bed is safe gives you great peace of mind. Put vaseline on the bottom of your bed posts, headboard, anywhere that touches the ground, get eucalyptus oil (they hate the smell!) and spray ammonia on the bed rails and nail posts. Make sure you get the boxspring, mattress AND pillow covers! Sleep tight and, no, the bed bugs won't bite!

Do the pillow encasement help with bed bugs????

Yes, they do. They completely encase the pillow, preventing ANYTHING from getting in. I have purchased the box spring, mattress and pillowcase protectors, and have yet to see an insect. However, Orkin did treat the zippers on the box spring and mattress protectors, as an added measure.

it is PVC and flame retardant free?

Don't know what flame retardant FREE means, but yes to pvc. This is an awesome product. Purchased for friend in nursing home. Washed well and stayed soft...does not make any noise.

Does this protect against bed bugs? The packaging doesn't advertise this as such, unlike your mattress covers that explicitly note bed bug protection
