Giant John

This is a not-so-well known book by children's author Arnold Lobel (Frog and Toad, Owl At Home, Mouse Tales, and many others) that deserves to be much better known. It was one of the books we regularly checked out of the library from the time my daughter was in pre-school until sometime during the college years when we did a kind of nostalgic reunion tour of our faves.I was delighted to discover a couple of years ago that it's back in print, and have purchased copies for my granddaughter and my grandnephew. It occurs to me now that other grandnieces/nephews do not have this book yet, and I never actually purchased it myself during the early, pre-internet years, so I'll be ordering at least three more copies very soon (the pregnancy watch in our family having not yet concluded).Spoiler alert! Other reviews here supply plot details which I would rather you let unfold for yourselves. With wonderfully accessible and detail-rich illustrations and text that will enchant without overwhelming, this book juxtaposes magical fairy-tale-dom with mundanely silly modern touches. A tale of friendship, filial devotion, enterprise, and humility that will warm your heart and tickle your funny bone. Just a delight. For ALL ages! If you're not convinced to buy, at least check it out at the library. I'm betting you fall in love.

Giant John has been added to my "Grandchildren Library." It has been a favorite book for my 5 children and now my 12 grandbabies. It is enchanting, timeless and never gets old. My "Grands" range from 12 to two weeks old. My kids grew up with this book and now purchase it for their children. But Nana has her own library and reads from it when they spend the nighT!

So glad to receive Giant John! Thanks! Grandmother read it to my kids! I read it to my grand kids. Our original was eaten by a pup, so this was an important find. Fun book with a serious side.

I was brought up with Arnold Lobel, and this one was always my favorite. I think it some of the irony in the illustrations make it something even adults should be able to enjoy. And the best children's books are ones that can be enjoyed on multiple levels.

I've loved this book since my sister was little in the 1960's. Read it to her, my children and now my grandchildren. It has become my gift of choice. Glad that it has been reprinted because I had been buying used copies!

I loved this book as a child and could never fine it before checking Amazon. There is a little wear but it does not make a difference to me. Very happy with purchase.

Love the story, love the illustrations. Obviously a favorite from my childhood. The little people and wrecked castle are printed in my mind. Can't wait to read with my daughter!

The story is simple but funny and engaging. The illustrations are magnificent.A must for 2-4 yo

This was one of my first books as a child in the early seventies, I now read it to my children, the story highlights many subjects children might encounter, but the one I remember the most is reparation, a simple and beautifully illustrated childrens book with lots of detail.

This was a favourite in the 1970s. It works for all children and hasn't dated.Beautiful illustrations & enjoyable to read for adults/carers with younger children.
