I'd recommend that you double up and use both the felt liner and sand. Less risk of a puncture this way. **Q: Is it really 40cm deep or is that rounded up? Also, would you think the design would allow me to build a "beach" at one end for wildlife to get out?** A: Wouldn't recommend buying. Picture makes it look quite solid but in fact it is flimsy and even developed a leak soon after fitting so i had to drain and use a pond liner. If i had my time again i would just use a heavy duty pond liner and then building a beach would be very easy. Had to take it out and re-do and same again epically if the ground is drenched and your garden is on a slope.
