The November, 1958 GREATEST HITS mono album repackaged on a mid-'80s era budget/mid-line CD.
DORIS DAY'S GREATEST HITS, Columbia CK 8635 budget/mid-line series CD reissue. The vinyl album was originally issued about November, 1958, on Lp Columbia CL 1210 mono, and reissued in rechanneled stereo about June, 1962, as Columbia CS-8635. The Lp was RIAA certified Gold album on May 17, 1968. Inexplicably, this album DID NOT CHART, but did attain the RIAA Gold Record Award, her only gold record, for about 650,000 Lps spread over 9 1/2 years (110 months). RIAA awarded gold albums at $1,000,000 sales based on 1/3 list price, which was $3.98 for the mono Lp and (beginning June, 1962 on the "stereo" version) $4.98 rechanneled stereo.Columbia's first "GREATEST HITS" album was by Johnny Mathis, about April, 1958. These Lp packages creamed Columbia's singles' back catalog on Lp, six songs per side. Day's Columbia era 78/45 singles recordings were completely separate from her album repertoire' for the most part, though this album conflates two album cuts on the last two tracks on the album. What you heard on the radio, jukebox, or bought on 78/45 wasn't generally available on her albums/Lps. After DAY BY NIGHT, Columbia CL 1053 mono/CS 8089 stereo (!!!), her albums are filler bores, excepting for DUET, with Andre' Previn (Columbia CL 1752 mono/CS 8552 stereo), and her Christmas album (Columbia CL 2226/CS 9026).Track list (Columbia 78/45 singles):Everybody Loves a Lover (4-41195)It's Magic (4-38188)A Guy Is A Guy (4-38673)Secret Love (4-40108)Teacher's Pet (4-41123)Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered (4-38698)Whatever Will Be Will Be (Que Sera) (4-40704)If I Give My Heart to You (4-40300)(Why Did I Tell I Was Going to) Shanghai (4-39423)When I Fall In Love (4-39786)Lullaby of Broadway (4-39159)Love Me or Leave Me (Lp cut from Columbia CL 710 movie soundtrack)Most recent tracks on this 1958 album are "Everybody Loves a Lover" (4-41195, July, 1958) and "Teacher's Pet" (4-41123, April, 1958); oldest tracks are "It's Magic" (4-38188, July, 1948) and "Bewitched..." (4-38698, May, 1950). The first ten tracks are her solo hits on 78/45 RPM singles, while "Lullaby of Broadway" didn't chart as a single, but was the title track of Columbia 10" Lp, CL 6168, one of her pre-1955 albums, and "Love Me or Leave Me" appeared on her #1 Columbia 12" Lp (multiple weeks at #1 on both Billboard and Cash Box magazines' charts) from June, 1955.All tracks are mono. Two of the tracks on this album sound like they were dubbed from disc (not studio tape) masters, "Bewitched" and, inexplicably, "Secret Love" (initially chart dates beginning 11/28/53, well into studio tape recording--this source is several steps down from a tape master). The balance of the album sounds sourced from mono tape masters. These are the top of Day's solo hits for the label. Sound quality on this is aging 1960 mono era vinyl mastering; the recording dials on my CD deck reflect vinyl era dynamics (pre-1985)--sound mostly in the bottom third-to-half of the loudness range with occasional peaks higher. Packaging only consists of the 1958 front cover photo on the folded insert with the back of the insert and CD box showing song titles only against a yellow background. You could change out the jewel box for a slimline box with the cover insert and recycle the jewel box for another album to save space without any loss of packaging. Two and a half stars. As a 33:32 budget package with so-so sound, it's OK. As her Top-of-the-Line hits singles comp, updating this is WAY overdue.Note: on a few reviews, I've noticed mention about when did Columbia ceased 78 RPM production. Last Columbia 78s were about Columbia 4-41013, "The Story Of My Life," by Marty Robbins, and Columbia 4-40955, by Jill Corey. Last Columbia stock 78s date about September, 1957-ish.

Ah!!! Doris Day, my childhood blond dream!!
So, we are reviewing Doris Day greatest hits. I have to say I am totally biased when it comes to this absolutely gorgeous, extremely talented lady, who could not only sing like a bird but who was also an all-around actress who stole may heart the moment I laid eyes on her. In fact, if I may deviate a bit from reviewing the CD, it was precisely Doris who set my goal in life to marry a blond - and, by George, hot #$%%! if I didn't! and I have been happy as a lark for the past fotry some years, so thank you!! Doris, you really made my life. But back to the review: Again, singing like a bird, I'm loving every song, every note. If you enjoy the songs of yesteryear, those that captivate your senses instead of feeling you are in the middle of a musical war zone that makes you feel someone is drilling into your brain, or you feel you are having some idiotic rap crap beating the hell out of your ear drums, then this melodic, easy going CD is for you. Lay back, listen to captivating singing from someone some of us certainly miss, so enjoy!!

Great gift for my Mother
I bought this for my 86 yr old mother who has early stages of dementia and is in a nursing home. She loves listening to it, really calms her down and she sings along. Us 3 kids (ages 50-56) love it too, brings back wonderful childhood memories. Even the 3rd generation of kids who were born well after Doris left the limelight can now sing the songs on the cd, as they hear it often when visiting their nana.

Extremely poor quality
I ordered this Doris Day CD because I owned the LP album when it was released many years ago. What a mistake! The recordings are extremely poor. Please do yourself a favor and look for other Doris Day "Greatest Hits"! I wish I had.

GREAT DD CD
I HAD THIS VINYL RECORD LP YEARS AGO, I BOUGHT IT USED AND THOUGHT "WHAT THE HECK, IT MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING I REMEMBER HEARING MY MOM SINGING"..THEN AFTER I PLAYED IT, I THOUGHT TO MYSELF "SHE HAS A NICE VOICE AND SOME NICE CATCHY SONGS TOO"..... IT WAS SO SCRATCHY THOUGH, SO THEN I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW REISSUE LP OF IT...HOWEVER IT WAS ONE OF THOSE COLUMBIA ELECTRONICALLY RE-CHANNELED "FAKE-STEREO" PRESSINGS. *YUCK*......ANYWAY, I'M SO GLAD COLUMBIA RECORDS DID NOT DO THAT WITH THIS CD ! THIS CD IS MASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MONO RECORDING AND IT SOUND GREAT ....AND ALTHOUGH I'M A BIG BEATLES, QUEEN & BLONDIE FAN , I LOVE THIS DORIS DAY CD TOO... BOTTOM LINE, THIS MIGHT NOT HAVE TONS OF SONGS LIKE SOME OF THE HIGHER COST CD'S...BUT IF YOU ARE JUST WANTING CREAM OF THE CROP OR JUST A CD FOR AN INTRODUCTION TO DORIS DAY *THIS IS A SURE & SAFE BET*...I LOVE IT !...........BOBP.S. SORRY FOR ALL THE CAP'S DUE TO POOR EYE'S AND POOR TYPING SKILL'S

Excellent!
I really enjoy this album!\I have decided to add the following to all my reviews:Beware! Some "reviewers" will trash a product for no reason simply because they are paid to or because they sell competitive products. Other "reviewers" will give products - that they have never seen and never used - glowing 5 star ratings - for a fee. Some honest reviewers do not understand what a product is for or how to use it and will trash a product simply because they are just plain dumb.
