John S. Sargent: 194 Master Drawings Paperback – May 17, 2015

Lovely sketches and studies from one of the best draftsman ever lived. This volume gathers a wide range of Sargent drawings including nudes, anatomical studies, portraits of Victorian VIPs, urban sketches, studies for statues and other public commissions, and more. You realize how great a painter Sargent was when you try to copy any of his drawings -- it's not easy. His advice to young painters was to carry a sketchbook and sketch everyday everything that you see. The result is unquestionable. His method of daily nonstop sketching is obviously an indispensable part of his stellar success. As someone said: success is 10% inspiration, 90% perspiration. Sargent is a proof of that and you can see the steps and labor that took him to the pinnacle of late19th and early 20th century American art in this instructive and inspirational volume. Money well spent.

I bought a used book but it was in very nice shape! The drawings are amazing to observe. I enjoyed it.

Sargent drawings are a go-to for an artist in training. The quality isn’t great or glossy here, but the pages hold good reproductions of his drawings. I tear them out and copy them. You may be more precious with your book. Either way, it works for what you need it to do.

I gave it 4 stars because these aren't all master drawings, but include a lot of sketches. I didn't give it 3 stars because even though they aren't all finished, brilliant works, there's still a lot to learn from even simple drawings, plus I felt generous, even if disappointed in the content. Just be aware that these are a pretty random selection of drawings by a master, rather than selected master drawings.

This is a wonderful. 194 of John Singer Sargent’s drawings in pencil, colored chalk, etc. Well done and well worth the price.

If you get some images and print them, you will still get a better book than this. Probably your printer has better quality. I know it's cheap and you can't expect much, but not so little. Taking into account the price and what you get, it is an expensive book.
