Review: Sharkbites simplify installations - When I first saw a sharkbite at my local hardware store, I thought, That's gonna be *so* useful ... if it works! I put it in a difficult application, near a pump that vibrates in a system with heated water and fluctuating pressure ... but also in a place where if it blew, it wouldn't flood the house. At the time I thought that the ease of installation was enough ... but now, two pumps and six years later, the ease of disconnecting, and the brute reliability of the connection, has me throwing sharkbites at plumbing problems all over the place! They're polymorphously perverse: you can shove pex, copper, or CPVC in there, and the connection *works*. In places where firing up a torch and soldering is scary (like in the crawlspace under your house) a sharkbite or two works as well, and reduces the anxiety by a couple of orders of magnitude. Talking to my plumbing parts supplier, I asked him if "real plumbers" (I'm a DIY property owner) use sharkbites, and he laughed. "Some hate 'em, because they're too easy," he said. I asked about reliability, and he recounted his company's story: when they first came out, the 'too easy' factor was in everyone's mind ... so they made up a tester with a pressure tank and a couple of sharkbite connections and then used their shop compressor to take the pressure up to about 120psi. For several months, they expected a pop or a hiss, but the pressure held steady. So the apparatus got pushed to the back of a storage area and forgotten for a few years ... and then, at long last, there was the expected whoosh! They pulled the apparatus out, only to find that the pressure tank had rusted through and failed. He did offer a caveat: the only time sharkbites fail is when the pipe being pushed in has a sharp edge, and damages the o-ring. So be sure to eliminate any sharpnesses, and bevel the tube end slightly before shoving. There's a cool little orange tool specifically meant for beveling and marking pex for proper insertion: worth the price. You'll also want the little orange doo-hickey that lets you release the device from the tube for removal.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Has anyone had this fitting numerous years with no issues? I'm having issues trusting it wont leak eventually. Thanks for any feedback.**
A: This exact fitting no, but I have many various size sharkbite (and other brands) push-to-connect fittings. Some more than 5 years old. Just as Robert, I too have had no issues.

I will expand on what he is saying about tools a bit. At minimum, you don't need anything more than a razor knife. Until my last repair that is all I used. You do have to make sure the ends are pretty straight and then sand them down smooth. I recently sprung for the actual pex cutting tool. Get it. It was $10 and it cuts through the pipe like a hot knife through butter with a straight cut every time. I put off thinking "how much more will I really use pex..". Well it's been pretty much every repair job I've done since I first used the stuff.

There are also different ways to connect pex pipe. There are these fittings, called "push to connect", where you only need push the pipe in until it stops and you're done. They connect to pex, copper or cpvc. 5 seconds to connect. Downside: they cost more than the alternative.
Then there are the pex barb fittings. For those you need to use a special crimp tool and rings. The tool is about $30 and the clamp rings about $10 per 25 (varies with size). If you're doing a larger job, with numerous fittings, it probably pays to go this route. Downside: more cost up front, still need to solder to copper.

Hope this helps you and any others looking for info.

**Q: Do you offer other fittings in this family**
A: I would recommend you inquire of the seller listed on the Amazon page for this item.

**Q: Will tbis work with plastictubing**
A: Hello, this fitting works with copper, PEX, CPVC, and PE-RT tubing. If you are working with PEX, it needs to have the following standards: ASTM F877/876 (these should be printed on the tubing) If you are working with polyethylene tubing, it needs to have these standards that should also be printed on the tubing: SDR 9, ASTM D2737

**Q: Will npt work with my steal pipe fittings?**
A: The brass fitting would not corrode just because they're dissimilar metals. It would depend on the type of system they're being used in, and the type of steel. NPT is NPT - it doesn't matter what the material is.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Initially concerned....

Not gonna lie. When I first got these I was concerned about leaks and waking up to my basement flooding as I had never used them. I'm used to either brazing copper pipes or priming and gluing pvc tubing. I'm a bit of a control guy and when I moved into my house years ago had ripped out the horror that was the tubing entering my basement from the well pump.. put in a whole house filter, pressure tank, other, removable filters and carbon filters, water softener etc. After years of use the softener had given up and the mechanisms sprung leaks all over. I wanted to take that out and instead put in an iron removing filter as our sinks and toilets need constant scrubbing with some of our lighter clothes becoming "work on the car" items due to staining. I read a lot of reviews here and elsewhere about the sharkbite connectors and wound up ordering them.. heck, they were returning so why not? I cut cpvc to length and put connected everything with sharkbite elbows, reducers, and a valves. Once I slipped everything together, crossed my fingers and opened up the water. Hmm,.. so far so good but lets wait and see.. turned on the water throughout the house and watched everything pop and shake as air bled out of the system and pressurized to 70psi. Okay.. so far so good. Cleaned up and went upstairs to eat.. came back down checking for leaks... went to watch tv (The Boys-started slow but ROCKS)... wife and I took turns checking for leaks. Went to bed... got up a few times... and now it's been a few weeks. Not a drop of water and none of the pipes has tried to slip out as we have them all marked for this purpose. These things rock! One of the things I like best is that you can rotate the fittings (ie; the pipes can still move, rotate etc) without leaks which means it's all super forgiving if you get your lengths slightly off and stuff is not 100% straight and true.. it adjusts.. something PVC and Copper do NOT do... and I can also move stuff around a few inches if needed without cutting/de-brazing pipes etc. I'm a convert!
