Mr Gum and the Cherry Tree

Recommended for reluctant readers
My 9yr old hated reading until we discovered Mr Gum.... Now he ask's if we can read!'Mr Gum and the power crystals' was 1st one we read (in just a few days, reading a page each) and then we bought the rest in order of publication. I had finally found some books which caught his imagination and weren't a chore. This latest one seemed to finish very quickly, but that might be because he's now so good at reading!!They are a joy to read because they are funny, my son often cried with laughter. Some books are better than others, but all are good.2 years on and we are still reading them and buying as each one is published. He is really a bit too old for these now, but they are still funny and still enjoyable.I can also recommend the 'Hiccup & Toothless' books about a Viking and his dragon by Cressida Cowell. 'Franny k Stein' about a young scientist and her mad inventions. For older boys, the 'Wimpy kid' books are enjoyed, but not so much by me!My son was behind a couple of years behind in his reading, but having finally found some books he truly liked and looked forward to reading, he caught up in just 9 mths!It was all about finding the right books for him. In his case, it was humour that appealed.

I put off reading this for a whole day ...
I've read all the Mr Gum books and ordered this one ages ago when I noticed on amazon it was coming out. I meant to save it for a gloomy moment. I read it anyway. I wouldn't have thought anything Andy Stanton (or anyone) could write would be any funnier than What's For Dinner, Mr Gum? (my previous favourite). But this is! Turn to page 43, or page 95... or any other page, really. If you order this book now (it's Wednesday), happiness can be yours by the weekend! This man is a genius.

Shabber me whiskers I loves it!
Another tale of derring do from the team that puts Clouds and Yoghurts at the forefront of crime fighting. The evil/vile Mr Gum and his disgusting offal-smeared side kick stoop to new levels of depravity in this one. Will Friday and Polly fall under his new old-ways or will the truth and beauty save the day?Older children will need two copies, so they don't have to fight their parents off it!
