It shaves. An epilator removes the hair by plucking each hair out. Those can be painful; but your hair will eventually stop growing or gets lighter, But only after many years of use. This doesn’t hurt because it trims each hair.

Cant get the battery compartment open, it isnt pulling apart aaargh?

I also had trouble getting the battery compartment open. It is so hard to open, but it WILL open. I took the top off and then I just hung on and pulled with all my might. I did just a VERY TINY BIT of a back-and-forth motion while pulling. Like a very SMALL TWIST. It came popping apart really quick. That's the only thing I don't like about it. But I think it is getting easier to open with each use. It does do a nice job of removing face and chin loose hair. For that reason I would recommend it, but not for the opening of the battery compartment.
