Perfect for ripping on linux
Bought this since I run an arch machine and I was having a hard time getting an affordable drive to start my backup hobby. I struck gold when I came across this drive. It is definitely region locked to japan, but using the Ultimate MakeMKV guide you can grab the firmware pack and easily find the firmware you need (ends in 22, read the other comment)It’s not hard either to flash the firmware and this thing rips discs at a decent speed, not crazy fast but good enough. I love it and would buy another when the time comes!

Good little drive
It's worked good for remuxing blurays and uhds. The firmware downgrade was pretty simple to do for uhds. I've used it for 6 months so far and done about 120 discs. Still works flawless.I wish Amazon also carried the powerbrick. I was able to get one imported from Japan but it would have been nice to get one the same time as the drive.

DON,T BUY THIS
DO NOT WHAT SO EVER BUY THIS DRIVE IT IS NOTHING BUT A PIECE OF JUNK. WHEN A DRIVE CAN,T READ IT,S OWN INSTALL DISC THAT A NO GO. A Good Drive but Caution
I really like this drive. It feels like high quality and a good value. I have the latest Cyber DVD software (I purchased it separately.I bought this to plug into my Dell Optiplex 7000 media center computer. The Cyber software told me that I need to install the Intel SGX extension and provided a link to download it. I did so and installed it. However, I discovered that the firmware in the computer doesn't provide a way to turn on the SGX in the BIOS. I contacted Dell to see if they can provide a way to turn it on. They told me no and to contact Intel. So, even thought I recently bought this Dell Optiplex 7000, I am on the hunt for a new manufacturer and computer. So, I still cannot watch my 4k UHD Blu Rays.

English Instructions Would Be Nice
I have to say, it was a complete nightmare getting this thing up and running. Some of my problems could've been avoided had Buffalo been so kind as to include English instructions in the box. I wasn't surprised at the lack of English instructions when I saw the box, as the text on the box is mostly in Japanese, but I also had no idea I was ordering a Japanese SKU for this drive from Amazon. Now, note that I said SOME of my problems could've been avoided with English instructions. The people producing and selling UHD Blu-ray discs seem to think everyone plans to use the discs on the regular. I'm sure SOME people do that, but I'm sure many people just want them because of the fidelity of the content on them, and they want to rip them for use with their Plex servers or whatever.Short rant directed at people who make UHD so inconvenient to use:You know, if you don't want people ripping discs, then give them a convenient way of experiencing the content on them. Don't load the discs up with unskippable ads. Don't make the discs take forever to load because of your security checks. Stop treating the people who buy discs like criminals. Maybe make a 50- or 100-disc UHD disc changer while you're at it. Do anything to facilitate making one of these God-awful UHD discs convenient in any form to use.Anyway, yeah, basically, you have to resort to community-made tools and community-made firmware updates to use this drive to its fullest. Make sure you have both USB cables plugged in, and don't use a USB hub unless it has its own power source. (If you see a red light flashing on the drive, then it's not getting sufficient power.) Get MakeMKV and consult the software's forum for info on unlocking the capabilities of this drive. It's a rebranded LG BU40N, so use firmware intended for that.
