A very compelling mystery
I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery & suspense thriller. The story was highly compelling. I previously read, “Fake ID” which inclined me to seek another title from this author. Needless to say I wasn’t let down.

Who did it?
Intriguing & fast paced. This was my first Lamar Giles but it won’t be my last. Will be very popular in my middle school library.

YA Gold
DJ Parsec, a popular teen DJ, was found murdered on her turntables. Now, her best friends, Fuse and Kya, are suspects. These girls despise one another, but are thrown together to solve their mutual friends’ murder.I really liked this YA murder mystery set inside the music world, equipped with the stan-base “ParNec Nation”. It was very much like what you see in social media where artists have their extreme followers, i.e. Bey Hive, Barbz, etc. being so deeply involved in an artists dealings and working overtime on speculation and conspiracy theories. When the cops let go and move on for lack of interest, the stans are hellbent on finding out what happened. The story itself was fast-paced, twisty and bingeable! The entertainment factor was A1! I liked getting all 3 girls’ insights and how each one brought a different spin - Parsec - the DJ, Kya - tech savvy, Fuse - the marketing genius. It was full of hip hop culture jewels, but also highlighting serious social/racial issues.🎁Thank you @booknerdfam for gifting me this copy. If you’re looking for a book to spark a love of reading for a teen in your life, this is a great place to start!! Also, a great parent/child buddy read & book discussion!

A new, more hip mystery
I was nervous in reading this novel because I am not usually one for mystery or murder novels. It is not my preferred type of story, so I did hold off on reading this book for some time. I had it for a couple of months before deciding to pick it up and give it a chance. I simply had more books on my TBR list that caught my attention more. So from the very beginning, I had a distrust in the story and wether it would actually hold my attention until the end or if it would end up on my DNF list. I admit that I enjoy mystery and murder novels every now and then, but the shape this book took had me questioning it from the beginning. I feared that because the story would revolve around a DJ that I would not be too interested. It is not a character I didn't think I would enjoy reading about. However, I will admit that the book held my attention throughout the entire story. From the very beginning, the story throws you into the main conflict, as most mystery or crime books do. It is with the progression of the story that more and more details are revealed. As the main narrators learn more of the developing case, so does the reader, creating the ill-using that the reader is walking alongside the narrator and understanding the story alongside the narrators. I appreciated that aspect of the story and was happy that the story was not told from the perspective of a detective or investigator. For some reason, those type of crime and mystery novels do not hold my attention at all. I generally do not like the detective characters and find them too boring to really care about. This story follows two protagonists, Fuse and Kya, as the work to get to the bottom of what happened to Paris Secord (DJ ParSec). The story follows the accounts of the two narrators and their dynamic throughout the story was very interesting. The story is setup in a way that held my attention throughout. I was invested in the lives of the characters and found myself wanting to know more about the characters. I was very satisfied with this read and was glad I gave it a chance.

A Murder Mystery Filled with Suspense and Twists!
Paris Secord, known as DJ ParSec to her adoring fans, is a popular up and coming DJ in the music industry. However, her career is cut short when she is found dead on the turntables by her two closest friends, Fatima (Fuse) Fallon and Kya Caine. When Fuse and Kya become the prime suspects for ParSec’s murder, the two girls must set aside their differences and work together to bring ParSec’s killer to justice and protect their own lives. With danger lurking around every corner, it is up to the girls to solve the mystery and find the killer before someone gets hurt. Working side by side, Fuse and Kya unearth the dirty secrets of ParSec’s life and ParSec Nation (a group of adoring fans who will go to extremes to support ParSec and her music). Filled with suspense and shocking twists, Spin by Lamar Giles will leave you reeling long after you finish the last page! In my opinion, this book was crafted skillfully and was a thrill to read. The plot kept my mind spinning faster than the ParSec’s turntables. The book had plenty of red herrings and plot twists to keep the reader fully engaged with the storyline. I found myself reading this book for hours, often into the early morning. The storyline was slow in the beginning, but the book quickly picked up pace. I really enjoyed how the author shifted perspectives and wrote from the viewpoints of Fuse, Kya, and ParSec. This added further depth to each character’s storyline and allowed the reader to gain insight into the minds of the girls. I recommend this book to teenagers, as some scenes were intense and graphic. In addition, I appreciated how the author included the use of technology because it gave the story a modern feel which I was able to connect to. Spin is an excellent murder mystery set in a tech-savvy era which will keep you at the edge of your seat.Review by Roksanna K, age 14, Broward County Mensa

Recommended YA thriller
When their friend DJ ParSec (real name Paris Secord) is found dead, Fuse and Kya find themselves accused of having something to do with her death. They have to put their mutual antipathy to one side and work together to find her killer. Using social media and harnessing the power of her online fan community, they start putting together Paris' last moments but their adversary is clever. Was it her on/off boyfriend, her business partner, or even a fanatic rogue part of her fandom? After a slow start, this shaped up into an above average murder-mystery-suspense. Fuse and Kya start off as enemies but they develop a deep friendship over their investigation. Told from the point of view of Fuse, Kya, and Paris in alternating chapters, each one had their own distinct voice. There was plenty of use of social media in the form of tweets within the narrative, and there was commentary on the fact that when cute white blonde kids going missing, the media coverage is huge even several years after the fact, and yet the murder of an up-and-coming young black music DJ was not considered newsworthy. Definitely one of the better YA reads.
