What It Was Like Before It Became What It Is
An interesting look at railroading in the Twin Cities in the years before, and the early years of, Amtrak. I remember taking Amtrak out of the old Great Northern depot on Hennepin Avenue. His pictures look cold, it was.I moved to Minneapolis too late to see the Milwaukee station in service. He has a great picture of a MLW train in the train shed that also shows them building the new ( now the old ) Federal Reserve Bank. The cover shows the route that Amtrak once took going east past the old Midway Stadium, a scenic landmark on the morning run out of Minneapolis. It has some nice pictures of the old Great Northern stone bridge across the Mississippi. The Amtrak diner was usually open by the time the train crossed. Sad to say, if you haven't ridden the train across that bridge by now, you never will. I think its a bike trail now.Railroading in the late sixties and early seventies is a good subject and Joe Elliot is a good photographer. His photos are very well reproduced in a quality book. The commentary by Aaron Isaacs is authoritative and helpful. Its also interesting to be able to see " that's Berman Buckskin !" or, "that's Metal - Matic". The Dain Tower was a prominent part of the Minneapolis skyline before the IDS building and the Hennepin County Government Center. I finally got to see the Twin Cities I missed. Thanks.
