Hawkeye

After the Avengers vs X-Men event, Marvel relaunched all their series under a new branding “Marvel Now!” It was supposed to make it easier for new readers to enter the Marvel Universe without needing tons of backstory/continuity. Which is why I decided to try Hawkeye, whose series I had never read. I had only encountered him as part of Avengers team series, or in crossovers. I like the character, so I picked up his newly launched title with Matt Fraction at the helm.The biggest problem I have with Marvel is that they relaunch, and relaunch, and relaunch series with new writers and artists, without giving readers a chance to get to know and enjoy a character before someone else comes in and changes him/her. Readers get 6, maybe 12 if they are lucky, continuous issues. Fraction got 22: twenty-two issues of character and story development that completely invested me in the series.One of the things Fraction really dives into is that Hawkeye has no superpowers, and what that would really mean being an Avenger. Hawkeye ends up in the hospital – a LOT. In fact, the story opens with a shot of Barton falling away from a building while shooting an arrow (almost exactly as he did in the Avengers movie during the Battle of New York). Only this time he crashes onto the top of a car and ends up in traction in a hospital bed. Barton is painfully human. He gets beat up often, and through most of the series he’s wearing bandages. His private life is a mess, exemplified perfectly by a panel showing his ex-girlfriend (Black Widow), his ex-wife (Mockingbird), and his current girlfriend (Spider-Woman). The main current of the story is Hawkeye’s “war” with some Russian Mafia-types who are trying to drive him and his neighbors out of their apartment building. This weaves through the entire run up to the conclusion. In between, he runs missions for SHIELD, mentors Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, and interacts with his neighbors. Readers get to know Clint as never before. His relationship with Bishop is a highlight. She knows what a mess he is and accepts it. She does what she can to help, learns from his and her own mistakes, and acts as a foil for him.The run only seriously stumbles twice. At one point, Clint invites his neighbor and her two boys over to watch Christmas specials, because he damaged her tv dish. Fraction inexplicably decided to write out one of those specials. It went on, agonizingly, for dozens of pages (probably an entire issue). At another point, the POV switches to Kate Bishop after she heads to LA after Clint ticks her off. Kate works best with a partner or team. Solo, she’s damn annoying. The conclusion at first seems weak, it wasn’t an epic battle, but for a very human character it worked.Overall, the entire run was excellent. I wish Marvel would give more authors a chance to build like this. And the art of David Aja was a perfect fit for Fraction’s story. The minimalist style (which I normally don’t like), in mostly sepia tones with pops of color, worked so well for the character. Highly recommended, especially this omnibus edition.

The lives and time of Clint Barton, with a slice of Lady Bishop. This is a peak behind the vale of the offer dysfunction of Hawkey's life. The main story revolves around a apartment building being cleaned out by some eastern European mobsters. Chaos erupts and both Clint and Kate are thrown in different directions, but are always on the same path unknowingly. Good read, but I wish the artwork was better. I know it was a choice. I just wish it was more like the cover art. The dog steals the show. 🐕

Qué queda pendiente de decir de esta obra de arte, los gráficos casi monocromáticos en cada página, los diálogos inteligentes y la secuencia de la historia hacen de este un must have en la historia de Marvel y más aún en el mito de Hawkeye- cabe mencionar que las animaciones en la app de kindle le añaden una dimensión cinemática que vale la pena vivir 10 de 10

This comic book reads like a good movie about a regular guy Avenger, his adorable sidekick,,and his convincingly human non hero friends playing out over 22 issues on my tablet.

This is one of my favorite comics and just really futzing glad I could get it as a collection since I'm always missing 1 or 2 in a series.THANK YOU!

I will gladly give my money for a good comic book!!!! I could not wait to get this book due to all the reviews that I read. I read the first story, and said ok this is just setting up the rest of the stories. Wrong! It went down hill from there. The stories keeps showing Hawkeye as a washed up loser that anyone can beat up on. Story after story shows someone (almost anyone) beating him up, him getting drunk, and him really not doing any great Hawkeye stuff that shows his abilities. Seriously, based on these stories alone, why would the Avengers (or us as a reader) want a washed up, self centered, drunk and useless "hero?" Everyone in the books seems to hate him and is disgusted by him including Hawkeye. I know heroes have problems. I like and expect that. However, this book made me not like him and see him as pathetic. The art sucks as well. Some of it was so bad that it truly looks like elementary kids could have done better (no disrespect to children). It tries to be clever, such as showing a story through a dog's point of view and this was to me a lazy way to tell a story. And the constant use of the bad guys using "Bro" was horrible. This was one of the few comic books that I've read that I skimmed that last 50 pages. "Bro" I have read several Matt Fraction books and this is the worse. He is not a good writer and if you like him, please show me a good story that he wrote. This was not one of them.If you have read this book and disagree, please show me an example of good writing or "funny" moment.

I was a bit worried that this book wouldn't be of good construction, but it is. This is a gorgeous book. The young Avengers issue at the beginning was boring, but it served the purpose of introducing a main character for the series. Understandable. The pages are a bit thin and could be easy torn on accident, but if you aren't flipping through the book in a careless manner you should be fine. A bit pricey, but I got a new copy from Brilanti Books for around half the price. An excellent seller.

Everything about this is impressive. I love the colours and lining, and the story is really good.I think this may have become my favourite book! (Sorry DD... but not sorry)

It was a gift for a friend. They seemed happy with it.

Zugegeben, ich war nie ein Fan von Hawkeye.Nachdem ich aber schon ein paarmal über den hier komplett vorliegenden Run von Matt Fraction gestolpert bin wollte ich wissen, ob die Lorbeeren gerechtfertigt sind...und dass sind sie! Hawkeye wird hier erstmals mit einer nie gekannten Tiefe erzählt, weg vom Superhelden und hin zum hier etwas vom Pech verfolgten, leicht verpeilten, sympatischen Typen von nebenan.Storytelling und Artwork passen perfekt, ich habe in den letzten Jahren nichts vergleichbares gelesen, bestenfalls noch den Daredevil-Run von Bendis (bei dem aber der hier vorhandene Humor fehlt).Dazu ist der Omnibus eine Augenweide im Bücherregal, auch wenn vielleicht die einzelnen Paperbacks günstiger wären - kaufen!!!

Absolutely the best comic book collection I've ever read. Matt Fraction and David Aja are a powerful creative duo and manage to rebuild Hawkeye from the ground up. Even when guest artists appear, they manage to hit it out of the park every time, thanks to Aja and Fraction's solid foundations. Complete with the incredible "Pizza dog" Issue, as well as the American Sign Language Issue, This book has it all. Exhilarating superheroics, gripping human drama and a whole lot of dumb fun. While Hawkeye's action scenes are simply fantastic, I found the best issues to be the ones that dealt with more personal and dramatic themes. Clint's irrational (possibly bipolar?) behavior makes for such an endearing character, but not in a "cuddly awwww" way. It's a book made by people who understand people, and even superheroes (with or without powers) have flaws. Just get it, do yourself a favor.

It's a book. I fail to see just how great it's supposed to be.It's a volume on Hawkeye, one of my favorite Avengers. Actually, it features both Hawkeyes.It's okay. I just fail to get the hype behind Fraction's run.Still, it's a good read.
