    Among the Best

These have become a mainstay in our kitchen. While they aren't inexpensive, they're still affordable and fairly priced. To be blunt, these "Roger Descours" vacuum-packed chestnuts in a jar (along with Clement Faugier chestnut products and one or two other brands of similarly vacuum-packed chestnuts from France) are the only such products I'll buy.I've never encountered a spoiled, "mushy," flavorless or otherwise unsatisfactory chestnut in any jar. We use them (especially seasonally, but at least somewhat year-round) in all sorts of recipes that otherwise would call for freshly roasted chestnuts -- soups, cakes and other desserts, pastas, and as an ingredient in main dishes, and they've always performed well. This is one of those situations in which "let the buyer beware" and "know your product" really apply (along with "You get what you pay for," although some dreadful products can come with a high price tag). While I don't mean to disparage any particular product (and I can't claim to have tried every brand of packaged chestnuts on the market), I encourage everyone to read the product information carefully before committing to any particular item. Many (if not most) of the chestnuts that come packed in foil-like pouches come from China. The quality of the nuts themselves is substandard; they often are mushy/pasty; and at best they lack flavor (and at worst they can taste bitter or have other "off" flavors). Why *waste* money only to have disappointing results from your recipes (and thus waste your time, to boot)? Aside from some "snacking chestnuts" that you may find on the market that are made in Italy or France (but the texture of which isn't really conducive to cooking), or making an effort to secure fresh, genuine Italian chestnuts and then carefully roasting and peeling them yourself, there's no other type of prepared chestnuts on the market that I would recommend other than these vacuum-packed chestnuts in glass jars from European purveyors who use European chestnuts. (They also have a very long shelf life if stored away from heat and light!)I recommend these very highly and without reservation.

    No Peal Chestnuts

*by G***M on Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2022*

We buy these every year to make chestnut dress with our turkey. It save cooking and pealing fresh chestnut that is an extreme pain if you have ever done it, and have 20 waste due to bugs, rot, etc. If you want an easy chestnut dressing, this is the only way to go. I fooled my picky mother who would not have touched it if she knew the chestnuts were out of a jar, rather than out of the shell and skin. She could not tell the difference
