Is anyone else having a hard time erasing the marker from this board?

Yes, the markers that come with it can be a little rough to erase, but I used a different eraser and it worked. I also just use my own markers to help with the issue.

Are there certain dry erase markers we should use? Expo markers do not erase easily, nor clean off with water.

I use expo markers and they work great. I have not had to use white board cleaner. Some colors require more arm power than others, especially if you leave it on for more than a couple of days.
