Stand the test of time outdoors
Great value. Have been installed outdoors under my deck in NE Ohio for 12 years now and still sound GREAT! Currently powered by a Fosi BT20 Pro with the 32v power supply. A great match and sounds much better than using channel B from my Onkyo surround system.

OMG Outdoor Speakers
Simply put, these speakers are amazing. I wanted new outdoor speakers for my 30x18 patio and BBQ station area (last summer scrapped my gas grill for a kettle charcoal grill and love grilling outdoors more than ever). I was replacing a pair of workhorse Infinity Outrigger Jr. speakers that served me well for 18 years, and still sound as good as the day I first installed them. But I wanted something with more detail at low volumes, and more bass punch, which could also handle larger wattage when the situation demands it. The search was on. An old JVC 5.1 receiver (120 watts RMS) in the basement powers a set of JBL speakers in the basement, and my outdoor speakers on the patio (A/B outputs on receiver). I love keeping old equipment in use if it performs well. We can rock out to my old LP records in the basement or the patio. I also have an old laptop (Windows Vista circa '2005) I use as my digital music workstation. It has all my mp3 files and streams Internet radio with ease. It's the perfect use for a laptop that can't do most other laptop activities in today's world. If you have an old laptop collecting dust, make it a media player for an old stereo/home theater system and you'll be shocked how nice it works. I compared Yamaha, Polk, Pyle, Klipsch, Insignia, Boston Acoustic, and Bose. The clear winner, when price is factored in, was the Yamaha NS-AW350. The Bose 151 Environmental sound was good, and it may be the favorite of people who like their signature sound. Certainly a classic outdoor speaker. Klipsch was very good, but also very pricey, at several times the price of the Yamahas, with comparable sound quality. The Boston Acoustics speakers sounded nice, while lacking some bass, but the compact cube would be useful for hiding them away in corners. The Yamaha, though, is as good or better, at half the price of the Boston Acoustics, with superior sound quality. I would stay away from Pyle, unless price is your ultimate consideration. They definitely sounded OK for the money. Not sure how the build quality is, though. The Insignias were nothing special, either, and well behind the Yamahas for about equal cost. The smaller Yamaha NS-AW150 was quite decent for a little brother version, but for an extra twenty bucks, you get so much more depth of sound with the NS-AW350. I would not hesitate to buy the NS-AW150 if a smaller speaker is required for an outdoor space. The NS-AW350 is on the larger side (which also greatly helps the bass response). There's no hiding these speakers. Fortunately, I have no desire to hide these wonderful speakers. They sound excellent at low volume, when chilling to NPR or relaxing music, but they really shine when pushed. The treble is crisp, but not grating. The midrange is well balanced. The bass response defies logic. The volume these can put out will quickly bring the authorities, or at least an angry neighbor. These speakers can easily drown out a gathering of 50+ people. For versatility and cost, these speakers cannot be beat. Yamaha should double the price, and they would still be the best speakers going at their price point. The only negative is the mounting brackets. They do not allow much movement, and only support one plane of movement. My old Infinity's allow me to install the mounts for tall or wide aspects, and tilt a good amount, so you can direct the sound where you need it. The Yamaha brackets provide only a small amount of tilt movement. I may fabricate an angled device to provide more slant for the speakers when mounted. Hardly a negative that would put me off these speakers.

Amazing price for such great speakers!
I really love these things. Crisp highs, excellent mids and and even some good bass (you do still want a subwoofer for some *real* low bass of course). Not only do they sound 100% better than my 3 other sets of 'outdoor speakers' they have some excellent volume - . No distortion and clear at both high and low volumes. One of the *other* sets are also Yamaha - same size, but not as well rounded tone or loudness and clearness. The other two are a set of JBL and Yamaha but both are a bout 2/3 the size of these and so really shouldn't be compared. Because they are a bit larger that any of the others I've mounted so.. you may want to check the measurements. Also check the weight. They are NOT light. I would NOT mount them directly to a sheetrock wall without some way to distribute the weight. These are outstanding for a back patio/backyard/pool area. They can really deliver - in all types of weather and heat. They are also amazingly clear and LOUD for a front yard "Halloween" display for music/Thunder. Of course I also have a subwoofer to get the REALLY deep bass for the thunder. After all, these only go down to 40Hz. . But the crisp clear crack of the lightning AND the music just make everything *pop*! SO happy not to have to use my nice (pretty expensive) home stereo speakers placed in open windows (which then get rained on grr..). Mounting was VERY easy. Note: these have a back plate you can attach to allow them to also stand on a shelf etc.

Nice large speaker. Grilles fall off (need to glue them back on).
What a pleasant surprise! When I got the speakers, they were well packed, and much larger than I expected. This is one beefy looking unit with a nice weight to it. I pulled off the old speakers the previous owner put up there, and put the new Yamaha's up. They were easy to hookup, and look great. Design is curved and stylish. I installed mine vertically so I can aim them down. The only flaw is there is limited horizontal travel, so if you need to aim them really low, you can't. I'm thinking you can pad the back with a 2x4 or something to gain additional travel, but that could have been alleviated with a deeper bracket. I was powering mine with a 2x50W Emotiva. Source is an Airport Express streaming music. The sound is quite impressive. Bass hits hard, and that can be tough being outdoors, and the highs are nice and clean. Speakers sound a little bright, but again this is a product of being outdoors. I was so impressed I bought a 2nd pair for another part of the outside. Only negative.. The grilles fall off after a few months. This is consistent on other reviews here, and in all 4 of mine. I super glued them back on and they have been on for 2 years now. I'd recommend anybody buying them to put a few drops of super glue in a few spots around the grille right away. When they fall off, the grilles can bend slightly and require work to get them back in perfectly, so better to just avoid the problem. In my review, I'm keeping in mind that these are $100 speakers, so I'm more forgiving about these grille and vertical travel issues. I will say the sound quality, look, and feel really are above and beyond their price point. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these. At the price they are, they are a steal!

I love these speakers but...
Ok, so I bought these years ago and they went under my eaves. I'm talking about 10 yrs ago. They sounded great and had so much bass for such a small speaker. The highs and mids are very musical and I can tell you that they sound fantastic with a harmon kardon old 80 watt receiver. Sadly, I remember when I bought my second pair, you cannot mount these from the ceiling they have to be wall mounted and I didn't want to drill into my brick again. I wanted to add these to extra speakers to the end of my house to cover more of my yard evenly as the two original ones are by my two entrances and when you are close to them, they will blow you away. I wanted the second set to use when we were in the pool as these would be close to the pool and far away from my entrances to the house. It would basically help me balance the sound out. Again, I love these speakers and my 10 yrs old ones are still kicking after 10 yrs. Only thing is they did get yellowish tint and the grills came off once but all i had to do was put them back on and push them in all the way. I would get these again in a heartbeat if they could ceiling mount. I ended up getting some definitive technology aw6500's. They sound amazing but for the price I do think they Yamaha's really hold their own. The build quality seems better on the aw6500's but they are also protected under the eaves of my house. I was thinking the bass on the aw6500's were going to blow my yamahas away but they didn't. They are a little bit deeper but I wouldn't say it's so much that you're missing bass on the yamaha's. Now what I can tell you is that the further away you walk from the house, the yamahas bass extension does start to fade a bit but it fades nicely. The deftechs seem to hold their bass more in comparison. Don't let anyone tell you these speakers do not have bass because they do and it's a very well tuned bass extension. I love they way they tuned these speakers to sound so musical. If you can mount on your wall you won't be disappointed with these.

Pound for Pound the Best Outdoor Speaker
These speakers, in my honest opinion, are the best pound for pound outdoor speakers on the market. I did a extensive amount of "recon" before this purchase. I first visited my local Bestbuy. I listened to their display of outdoor speakers from Bose, Klipsch, Insignia & Yamaha. Unfortunately, Bestbuy did not have the Yamaha NS-AW350 or 390 on display for demo, it was the much smaller NS-AW190. From the display demo, the best sounding speakers from best to worst were Klipsch, Insignia, Yamaha and last Bose. I found this kind of strange because the Bose products really sounded great at the Bose Store. Never the less I wasn't about to spend $300 plus on a pair of outdoor speakers. So my search continued to Outdoor Speaker Depot in Brea, CA. They had a great selection of their products on display for demo. I really was interested in the OSD AP670 but they didn't have it on display. So I demoed a similar or better speaker according to the salesman. I wasn't too impressed but willing to take a chance and buy the AP670 if they matched a on-line price. Since they are the supplier, manufacturer and wholesaler of their product, I found it funny and strange that Outdoor Speaker Depot could not price match a online store that they supplied. So I bounced. Becoming frustrated and tired I decided to take a chance on the Yamaha NS-AW350W for $88.00. These speakers are connected to a Denon receiver zone 2 via Monoprice 14/2 CL2 speaker wire. These speakers are the best pound for pound in terms of price, build quality and most importantly sound quality. If these speakers only sounded good and not great, I would have sent them back. Trust me, I know how good speakers should sound. I currently use a B&W Zeppelin Air indoors for convenience and also have a full B&W home theater set up including 802's. Visit your local Bestbuy Magnolia store to be blown away. If not by the sound quality you will be by the price! Trust me, if your considering outdoor speakers, save yourself the time and aggravation. I have done all the research for you.

Very nice - great sound quality.
I installed this under the eave of our garage so we could enjoy music while sitting around a fire pit in the driveway. The speakers are 11' off the ground and about 35' apart. The sound is outstanding, however it is somewhat directional. If you are right in the middle, it is truly amazing, but as you move closer to one speaker or the other, you really notice the loss of the other channel. This is probably to be expected but the affect seems more noticeable than I would have thought or I have experienced with a different set of speakers I have installed on the inside of the garage. The instructions actually include diagrams and something about maximum separation for two speakers (which I exceeded). I'm very happy with these as we will almost always be positioned in the middle when using them, but I thought it might be helpful to share for other use cases. I have not experienced any issues with the grills coming off like others have mentioned. When the speakers arrived, I actually tried to pry one off to see if I was going to want to glue them before installing. I was unable to get it to come loose so perhaps the manufacturer has addressed this complaint. These speakers are a great value - I'd buy them again.

Great Value
For $80 a pair, you can't do better. Yes, there are better speakers on the market. Yes, they cost LOTS more. When I'm outside, it's party or work-in-the-yard time, I'm not there for serious listening - and for that purpose, these Yamahas are great. They sound good on all kinds of music, from orchestral to Jazz to Hip-Hop. They can handle plenty of power without distortion - enough to fill the whole block with sound if need be. Good strong bass from the 6.5" woofers plus enough mid-range and treble so you can hear all of the music. Nice mounting hardware is included for a variety of situations, plus a handy little stand if you want to keep them portable. The only thing you'll need is some screws or bolts to attach the hardware to a wall or deck. (Don't cheap out on the hardware, these speakers are heavy) I have a friend who has a pair of B&W WM-6 speakers in his outdoor listening area - and they sound a little bit better. At $275 EACH, they ought to. The Yamahas, on the other hand have a little more bass to them. To my way of thinking, this makes the Yamahas better for "Party" mode. If I lived in a part of the world where the outdoors was quiet, and the weather was great much of the year - I would probably spring for the B&Ws. Since I live in a noisy Urban Midwestern town, the Yamahas make sense for me. UPDATE: After two summers, they still sound great, but there have been problems. 1- As many have reported, the grills came off of mine after some hot weather. A few drops of Gorilla Glue fixed this. 2-When I was taking them down for the winter, I noticed that one of them had water inside! I managed to drain it out and the speaker still sounded good. I put a bead of black caulk around the seams. Hopefully that will fix the problem. I had to knock off two stars because of these issues. If you want good outdoor sound - but are on a budget, or expensive speakers would be a waste, you can't go wrong with these - if you don't mind doing a little extra work.

Great Sound!
Great option for outdoor speakers. Easy to install and incredible sound, with actual bass! I spent a significant amount of time researching on outdoor speaker options, and by far, these were the best. Although these are a few model years old, they still pack a great punch.

Great sound, great volume, great value.
Great clear sound. Surprising bass for outside. Will definately be loud enough to annoy neighbours(not that that's my goal, just saying). Smaller than I though they might be. Very pleased overall. UPDATE: All of the above still applies as of January 2017, so I guess we can add longevity to this list. The better part of 3 Canadian summers and winters.
