Foundation Exercises For Bass

Great instructional book but not for the lazy... Ya have to learn to read, a little.
Once I cracked open the book, I realized that a ton of people out on the Internet are scraping the author's material and putting it out there for search; it's good stuff. Thing is, you need to sit down and work your way through it, lesson-by-lesson, and "learn how to read music as you learn how to play it". Once you finish the book, you will have become an intermediate level "bassist" and will have earned your way to it. The lessons are big on time, rhythm, and becoming musical. Simplified musical theory. It's worth the small investment.

Essential for bass players
Foundation Excercises for Bass is a very well done teaching tool, or, for the player, an essential tool for growing your ability. Whether you're a novice or an experienced talent, the excecises keep you nimble and thinking about your finger placement so that you avoid getting tangled up in your own fingers. ( Been there - done that) It's probably not ideal for those playing by ear or learning just be "TAB" but if you want to also learn the basics of reading the music, this is a good resource for that as well. Highly recommend

and this is a great next step instruction for him
Bought this book for my son, who has been playing bass for a year and a half.He started out with the "Hal Leonard Bass Method - Complete edition", and this is a great next step instruction for him.

practice makes betterness
Exactly what it says: Foundation Exercises. I've been working with this book for a little over a month and already can feel my relationship with my instrument improving. I play bass for money twice a week with guys who make a living at it. Fortunately, I don't have to rely on music to eat, but it is nice to make money playing bass. So. I'm a semi-pro player and would recommend this book for anyone who wants interesting, fun and challenging pieces to work on. I include 20 minutes of this book in my 30-60 minutes every couple of days.Go for it.

Good bass beginner's book
A fair amount of the beginning material in this book is taken from from Chuck Sher's longer book, The Improvisor's Bass Book, and the prospective buyer might wonder if it would not be a better idea to buy the longer (200+ pages vs 93 pages) Improvisor's method rather than this book, particularly as the longer book (in the print version) is only $2 more. WHile the more advanced player with a solid knowledge of theory might do well with the Improvisor's Method, I think this book is a much better choice for the starting bassist. It contains a number of things that the longer book doesn't, like basic M7, m7 and dom7th chords spelled out in all 12 keys, and the associated scales (Major, Minor, Mixolydian) spelled out in all 12 keys. This is a great help for the beginner who is encountering these ideas for the first time. After mastering the material in this book the aspiring bassist will be able to play simple (if not particularly interesting) lines for standard tunes. At that point a good book to look at would be one of Steve Mooney's books, like Standard Lines - Jazz standard & Bebop bass lines - Bass Tab Edition (Constructing Walking Jazz Bass Lines). While there are a number of great bass line construction books, this is one of the few that actually takes the student through all 12 keys instead of just providing lines in Bb and suggesting that the student apply the ideas learned to other keys. Having interesting, yet basic, playable lines written out is a great help to the beginning bassist.
