read aloud book
This is a book I read to first and second graders for library story time. Older students remember it and check it out later. Our school is religious based with a diverse student body. The story and the illustrations keep the attention of the listeners. They find the little girl's interpretation and reactions to the events quite understandable. The children ask questions and discuss what happened so that they end up with an idea of civil rights and segregation in everday life.

Great book
My 10 year old sadly has been learning about the difference between herself and her classmates. She recently has been asking about the beauty of being black or why I refuse to straighten her hair. As I explained to her slavey and Jim Crow she seemed surprised so this was one of the books I chose for her to read to learn her culture and how we have overcame huge obstacles in our history. It's my job to teach my children our history because the schools won't.

This book was donated to a local school library. Evelyn Coleman is a wonderful writer of children's books and has a magical way of bringing even serious subjects into focus for young people.

I'm sure my great granddaughter will enjoy it
I'm sure my great granddaughter will enjoy it. I am trying to introduce ALL kinds of stories to all 7 of them. They need to know what and how blacks are and have been treated.
