Will this work on spiders? I have a family of spiders that keeps making egg sacs outside my window and one or two get in periodically

Sorry, I had never used for spiders or any other insect but roachers. It is great for those.

Is it supposed to harden?

I believe over time it does. I cant recall how long but it works. I have not seen 1 roach not even 1 baby after using this product my place is 100 percent roach free. Over time it does due to indoor tempature changes but its over a long period of time I didnt record. Now if it hardens in the tube no its no good.
