Note that steel is NOT mentioned. However, Jax makes a product called JAX Iron, Steel and Nickel Blackener and it says, Produces an antique metallic black finish on iron, steel and nickel. **Q: Does this work on led free pewter ?** A: Pewter has been lead free since 1974 so yes I have used this on lead free pewter and it seemed OK **Q: Will this work to re-store the patina of a mirror..?** A: No. It was used to degrade the shinyness of the original pewter patina so it was older and less shiny looking. Worked very well. **Q: I made a cube out of leds and i'd like to turn all the wires between the led's black, would it affect the plastic housing on the leds?** A: I used the Jax Patina on pewter sconces but did not touch any plastic wiring so I cannot answer you directly except to say that it is pretty lethal stuff as a form of acid etching, so I would think it would affect the plastic. I clear coat after drying for a lasting finish. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Jax Pewter Black *by L***A on March 25, 2025* Worked very well to "age" a brand new 2" pewter owl figurine that was too shiny and silver-looking for my taste. I put the figurine in the Jax liquid for about 20-30 seconds. The chemical reaction started within a second or two and looked like brownish rust. Since it was my first time ever doing this I didn't know what to expect, and was waiting for the brownish stuff to turn black but it just became a darker brown. At that point, using needle-nose pliers as tongs, I took the owl out of the liquid and began rinsing and rubbing it under cool running water (I wore disposable nitrile gloves). As the brown stuff rinsed away I could see the patina left behind was in fact a dark gray (whew!!). With the figurine still under running water, I used Q-Tips to further rub off the chemical that had settled into the nooks and crannies. In the future I would leave the pewter object in the liquid for less time since came out a tad darker than I would have liked, but I do prefer it to how it looked originally.
