First, I guess you need to know something about them: "The beautiful ones." "The flawless four." Everyone wanted to be them. You know them. They went to your school, too. First there's Courtney "Satan-in-Heels" Shayne (Rose McGowan) and her pawn, the dense but dangerous Marcie Fox (Julie Benz), a legend in her own little mind. Then there's angelic Julie Freedman (Rebecca Gayheart), doomed to be popular because of her pretty face. And lastly, the teen dream herself, Elizabeth Purr. When an ordinary kidnapping prank leaves the future prom queen dead (accidentally gagged with a jawbreaker), a deadly sweet prank leads to cover-up makeover in this edgy and unpredictable comedy. But there will be no mercy as prom night arrives, bringing this spirited tale to its cruel tiara-dropping conclusion.

Wicked good fun
Jawbreaker has cult classic written all over it. It did poorly with critics, gets a 5.x rating on imdb (I swear, all the coolest, and polarizing, cult films fall into this rating), yet has style and attitude for miles. It's a dark comedy with horror elements. This is maybe my favorite Rose McGowan performance. She is stellar, as are the other girls in her clique. But she kind of steals the show. Rebecca Gayheart does look super foxy in a leather skirt. "Mean girl" Courtney and her cohorts abduct one of their own, on her birthday, and throw her in the trunk. Problem is, Courtney popped a jawbreaker in her mouth, duct taped her mouth shut, and it KILLS her! What an awesome soundtrack. Primarily grrrl power alt rock and roll. Veruca Salt plays over the opening credits! And the freaking DONNAS appear in this! Back when they were still the "Donnas". They are young and gawky! They lip sync two songs (kind of poorly) at the high school prom. I would've gone to mine if The Donnas appeared!
