Excellent Movie for Fans of the Series

I am a dedicated fan of the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries series. I'm not certain how someone who never saw the series would experience the film. I would definitely recommend watching the series first. I think that the producers were able to keep to the dynamics of the show in movie format on a somewhat limited film budget. They really picked up nicely where the series left off. The film was dynamic, and for the most part, well paced. The dialog and sexual tension between Phyrne and Jack was wonderful. As with the series, Essie Davis was a true star who carried the film. Miriam Margolyes appearance as Aunt Prudence was also good to see. The costumes were stunning as were the filming locations. I thought the actress who played Shirin Abbas was very compelling as were the brief flashbacks to the women in the Bedouin village in Palestine. An added bonus was seeing very brief glimpses of members of the fan community who appeared as extras in the film.If I had any critiques, it would be that several of the original cast members had no more than 1-2 minutes of screen time (Ashleigh Cummings, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Anthony Sharpe, and Travis McMahon) while others were completely absent (Tammy MacIntosh, Richard Bligh, and Ruby Rees). I realize this was probably due to scheduling conflicts and budget, however I would have much rather had the entire film made in Australia if it would have meant including some of these actors in significant ways. On the other hand, several of the new peripheral actors had far too much screen time. I also could have done without the silly paranormal aspect of the story line with the giant green jewel and curse. In the series Phyrne and Jack were rational people who lived in reality, while other characters believed in spirits and the afterlife. It was disappointing that the film script couldn't have kept it that way.

Jack Pobinson and Phryne Fisher are hot, but this movie didn't boil

So, I am a big fan of this series and it could have stood another season or two and I would've been happy. A movie as a consolation prize. I was interested, but I did not expect much. Sometimes expectations are met. The story was interesting, but the resolution was nonexistent. The timeline? Who needs one? The wardrobe changes out of nowhere? Obviously can be explained by witchcraft. Jack and Phryne's relationship trouble? They were blown away by the desert wind. Duh! Honestly, Phryne's character was devalued. She loves Jack, but there is no emotional vulnerability. I feel like the writers were not trying to tie Miss Fisher down or subtract for the concept that she is modern and doesn't need a man. However, we know she doesn't need a man, but Jack isn't her cake he is the icing. Miss. Fisher is a smart, charming, troublesome, and beautiful whirlwind. Jack is an honest man who falls deeply in love with a force of nature. He has never attempted to tie her down. I feel through this Phryne showed no care for Jack just attraction. When they are clearly beyond that in the series. They are true partners in the series a fact that we only get glimpses of. But it was there all the elements of an old-fashioned Jack and Phryne misadventure and great story by everything need to be flushed our.
