Under the Radar
Thankfully I didn't read any reviews before I watched this film. I recalled seeing the preview a couple of years ago, and I thought, you can't go wrong with Weaver, Murphy & DeNiro. I waited for it to come out, however it never screened in the town I lived in (I just found out there was a limited release). I stumbled upon it a few nights ago via Amazon, not knowing what was in store for me. Let's just say I wished I wouldn't have watched this on a work night because I couldn't get to sleep for a couple of hours after watching it. It was that good. With that said, I went on to read a few initial reviews via Rotten Tomatoes, and I was in shock at the terrible ratings it received. I thought "What universe are these people on?" And as a previous reviewer stated, what movie were they watching because it couldn't have been the same movie I saw, and I'm pretty particular about films, not easily swayed. The acting was powerful with DeNiro & Weaver, obviously, however Cillian Murphy is slowly paving his own place as a very powerful actor who throws himself so mercilessly into any character he plays (check out The Wind that Shakes the Barley). This is definitely a thriller that you have to pay attention to right out of the gate, because you will miss clues, and yes, you'll probably need to watch it a second time.I feel the film is timely due to the rise and popularity of psychics in the world. If you're looking for a "surface Hollywood formula" film, then you won't like it. The narrative of this story lets you know nothing is as it seems, people or events. One's account of an event is completely different than someone else who witnessed the same event. I like films that aren't linear, though that can make a movie-goer uncomfortable as we've gotten used to being let in on every single thing as a film progresses. Parting words: if you have heart medicine, take it before you watch this film. I don't know where the negative reviews are coming from. This is one that slipped under the radar. No gimmicks or tricks.

Inundated with potential
My rating is more of a 3.5.Thanks for reading! With recent Trends showing a rise in the belief of paranormal entities, skepticism is the key in which those with doubt use to justify a scientific appraisal of claims. This apprehension often exists in two forms - different mostly in observational approach and willingness to depart from the pre-existing nature of thoughts in light of empirically sourced evidence or conclusions.Red Lights is a 2012 Spanish-American thriller film written and directed by Rodrigo Cortés and starring Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, Toby Jones, Elizabeth Olsen and Robert De Niro. The plot focuses on a physicist (Murphy) and a university psychology professor (Weaver), both of whom specialise in debunking supernatural phenomena, and their attempt at discrediting a renowned psychic (De Niro) whose greatest critic mysteriously died 30 years prior.Conversations and debates involving behavior and/or phenomenon with no primarily logical explanation is nothing new - and there is much to be said about the obsessive and sometimes desperate nature of those with an Infinity for the supernatural in those that need some convincing. That said, it is clear that ‘Red Lights’ understands this conundrum, but its first folly is in presuming this subject matter alone is enough to make itself a memorable investment. The exposition is successful in terms of polarizing its characters (the professional, the amateur, and all that is in between), but little is done to justify the gravity of their role as it relates to the overarching context. As a result the villainy displayed and alluded to becomes exhaustingly exaggerated, and the motives plaguing its protagonist slowly fade away from their concrete and presumably necessary existence. As equally neglected is the potential complexity of ‘Red Lights’ characters and its plot. Moreover, not much is done to meaningfully engage with audience members for the sake of being suspenseful. With the exception of the ending (Hold that thought) attitudes about the Paranormal are stubbornly kept in place with very little suggestion that alternate routes or possibilities have even been considered as potential points of contention worth exploring. The straight forward nature in what information is revealed is bolstered much by performances one could rightfully described as disturbingly poignant (“Kill”ian Murphy knocked this shit out of the park), but even these don't make some individuals feel less like throw-pillows that take up space and more like fully functional appliances. For what this becomes, the twist makes slogging through to the last 15 minutes worth it. Not only is it completely unpredictable, but it also nulls some of my earlier commentary to a point that is reasonably negotiable. The lack of exposition is juxtaposed with a grand reveal. Intricacies become present where simplicity was existing and prevailing and abundance. It's a shame that the climax relies on cliches and cheesy camera tricks to make itself known, but the originality in terms of the story is arguably hard to come by. Inundated with potential, ‘Red Lights’ constrains itself to the point of being average at best - but is far from being worthless or having absolutely no redeeming qualities. This being an enjoyable view for audience members with a natural inclination for the psychology and study of extrasensory perception is a no-brainer; Unfortunately, many viewers seem destined to fall through the cracks as they are so brazenly unaccounted for due to assumptions made about the knowledge and passions they will naturally bring to the table. Regardless, I would recommend(Even if not strongly)

Smart movie for smart people
I confess, I understood it better the second time through. There is a lot here to take in, though the movie can be enjoyed for it's obvious elements as well as for it's clever, more subtle attributes. This is a throwback, a movie that would have won the academy award easily in the 40s, 50s, or 60s. We are both more jaded and less perceptive today. We aren't impressed with the big moments and we don't understand the small moments. The script was brilliant in it's undaunted and well-educated attack on charlatans. Don't let your feelings mislead you ... trust in truth. Don't be taken in by your desire. Look for answers. The ending smacks you upside the head. Pay attention, or you might not be able to answer Silver's (Dinero) question, "How did you do that?!"
