Phil Bodner's interpretations and musical leadership leaves you wondering if there really is a heaven to go to when you die. Because the music cajoles the ears, softens the edges of your day and allows you to believe you are comfortable, and at peace with the world. Heaven is coming out of the horns straight to your ears in the present. I bought every Brass Ring LP album each time I could find a new one in the late `60s and early 70s and they received a lot of play. Special thanks to Collector's Choice Music for putting this great music on CD. It's so nice to be able to listen now without the pops and clicks on my old vinyl. I bought all 3 CDs available and have been rewarded. For example, last year I BBQed the sacred cow  The Lettermen!!!...and "Live! , and I am still nowhere near hearing the end of that from old school AM radio fans.That is why I am happy to submit a positive review of these two Brass Ring albums. Am I pandering? Not at all. It is never the "easy" in "easy listening" that makes me take out the charcoal and lighter fluid: it is the artificial sugar on top. With Brass Ring, that is not a problem.I might be going to far if I said the Brass Ring handles easy listening with a fun sense of irony. It may be that this only sounds such from a 2010 perspective. But listen to the etherial female vocals on the title track to -"Disadvantages Of You," part of which was uses in a Benson and Hedges ad when ciggy commercials were still tube legalThat voice is pretty, very angelic, but there is almost a mocking behind it. Frankly, you are not sure if it is a half-goof or not, but it sure does not have the puppy dog cuddle of the Letterman or Bobby Goldsboro that dates such material so badly. There is a sexuality here most easy listening tried to erase.Maybe unfortunately, that voice does not show up much throughout the rest of the album (maybe that angel flew up to heaven to teach Goldsboro's dead honey a little about the birds and bees. ) But there are a lot of covers of then hits, "California Dreamin'," "Look Of Love," that sound almost as if Neal Hefti arranged them. Few strings or harps, but lots of organ and Walter Matheau on a bad hair day horns.Anyway, if your strictly a Blue Cheer and Hawkwind, your barking up the wrong tree.
